Town Covering General Doings.
Union, May 4. (Special to Obser
ver.) Robert Brown an employee of
' the Union Pine Lumber Co., had the
misfortune to mash two fingers on
one of his hands while engaged in
his work about the mill. He came to
town and had his hand dressed by a
physician and found that it would
not be necessary to have the fingers
amputated as it was thought that
; they would have to be at first. Ho
is getting along nicely and will soon
be at work again.
Mr. and Mrs. Kitchen are rejoicing
at the arrival of a son on April 27th.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. A. B, Hempe
on April 27th., a son.
The firm of Smith & Cadwell has
dissolved partnership and Mr. Smith
will continue the business while Mr.
Cadwell will seek another business lo
cation. This firm has built a fine
business and it is with regret that
this town will lose Mr. Cadhvell. Both
members of the firm have demon
strated their abilities and will succeed
wherever they go.
Wm. R. Hutchinson will soon be
at home as he is able to be up and
around1 at the Grande Ronde hospital
where he has been for several days
past. His many friends are glad to
learn of his speedy recovery.
Mrs. Wool has been quite sick the
past few day's. Miss Katie Wool who
has been working at Baker has re
turned home to be with her mother
during her illness. Mrs. Wool fs im
proving and will soon be out again.
Frank Hempe has purchased a 15
30 gasoline engine from the Rumley
Co., through Mr. Cole and also a
threshing separator and will now
thresh his own grain as well as do
his own plowing. He also got six
plows with his engine. He will farm
on a larger scale.
Mrs. Cadwell who was called to
Washington on the sudden death of
her mother has returned home.
Quite a large crowd was out to
hear the lecture on good roads and
to see the demonstration afterwards.
The gentleman certainly knew what
he was talking about and the mat
ter of good roads especially the road
which follows Cathrine Creek.
We were all delighted with the
Elks Minstrel show from La Grande
and Union turned out "en masse" to
greet them. It was estimated that
between four and five hundred peo
ple attended the show which was fol
lowed by a free oance.. The pro
ceeds will go to help the stock show.
The Union people appreciate the ef
forts of La Grande and will only be
too glad to reciprocate whenever (we
can.

I building are farming a part of the
Hill block under the direction of Mr.
Ersland. They have it laid out in
plots and are very busy with their
planting at present. We' will have
something for the state fair and will
win a prize or more likely a number
