Wallowa, Ore., March 29. (Spe
cial) The debate which was held in
the high school auditorium Friday
night between Enterprise and Wallowa
high schools resulted in a victory for
the visitors. The honors were hotly
contested for but the Enterpriseans
seemed to have a little ; advantage
over their opponents. The question
for discussion was: "Resolved, that the
literacy test clause of the Burnett Im
migration bill is a desirable provision."
The arguers for the locals were Karl
Hendricks and Delia Fleshman; for
visitors, Mr. Lewis and Miss Stub
blefield. The Judges comprised three
of Joseph's business men.
Reverand Shimian, pastor of the
Presbyterian church, preached his
furewell sermon Sunday evening. Dur-
ng his rhort stay in Wallowa, Mr.
Shimian has made many friends who
greatly regret his departure. He has
accepted a call to North- Bend, Coos
Co., Ore., Rev. I. B. Self of Lostine
Will occupy the local pulpit tempori-
aily pending the selection of a new
minister. . ' ' ' '
Workmen at the Nibley-Mimnaugh
Lumber Co's. mill are busily engaged
installing the now boilers which ar
rived Wednesday. They expect to be
gin sawing lumber in about two weeks.
Bill Allen has been cnosen as man
ager of the baseball team for the year
of 1914. , The prospects of Wallowa's
baseball team are'of the brightest and
a good showing will undoubtedly be
made this year.
Mr. C. F. Fleming for the past four
years mill superintendent for the Nibley-Mimnaugh
Co., has resigned. The
position will be filled by E. M. Hall.
Dick Galloway of Gwynn, 6pent
yesterday and today with his family
in this city.
A. E. Tulley arrived yesterday for
a short visit with his family of this
city.
The lecture in the Presbyterian
church Thursday night on "Love,
Courtship and Marriage" was well at
tended and a humurous and beneficial
evening was spent.
Earl James and Ralph Couch ac
companied by J. J. Beaty went to
Joseph Friday to debate in that ctyy.
Corrine Bue of the Shell Mercantile
Co., spent Saturday in Enterprise.
Leonard Evans, and Minnie Evans
left Sunday for Pine Valley where
they expect to visit with their sister,
who is a resident of that city.
Mrs. C. T. McDaniel and 'son, Don
ald arrived Friday from Portland
where they made a visit of about two
weeks.
Mrs. J. C. Baird, L. E. George, and
W. G. Trill went to Enterprise Friday
night to act as judges in a debate in
that city. The trip was made in an
auto.
Miss Nell Davis made a business
trip to Enterprise the latter part of
the week.
Mrs. Jim Hayes and daughter Lau
ra arrived from Portland where the
latter has been nursing in the Multo
ncmah Hospital, but is home for a
vacation on the account of sickness.
A number of young ladies took
their Sunday dinner and spent the
day in tjie Whiskey Creek region.
Those of the party were: Carmen
Clark, Olive Golf, Olive Tully, Edith
McKenzie, Lulu Plass and Stella
Johnson.
Mrs. Mac Dunn went to Joseph Fri
day on business returning Saturday.
Henry Srhock and wife arrived
from Portland where they have been
spending their honeymoon after their
marriage in Freewatcr.
Ashford McGinnis arrived from
Cowtkn after n two weeks visit with
his parents. The trip was made on
foot.
