ilasquerade ball, which was held Fri
day night at Morclock's opera house
was well attended by the people of
Wallowa and the vicinity. The mar
queraders who held the floor till 1
O'clock made good theier appearance
and each one did, his or her part by
representing some well known char
acter although ; many were up to
date in . their ; costumes;" At, ,11:00

the judges for the different prizes.

George Rogers has just finished an
up-to-date chicken house and scratch
ing pen. Mr. Rodgers has about 100
white Monarchy chickens and states
that they are laying a good average
a day. .
, Albert Hunter of Island City, is in,
the city visiting his relatives, Mr. and
Mrs. C. A. Hunter. .
Henry Schaffer has left for Cali-
fornia, where he expects to spend the
winter. " i
Every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday nights the Wallowa Athletic
Club practice basketball in the old
school house. They are getting in
shape for the several games which
are to follow.
A. H. Pipes is in from La Grande
visiting with relatives in this city.
Bill Spense, Joe McClaran, Bill and
Chellis Allen were among the visitors
who attended the masquerade ball
from Lostine.
Ray Johnson of Inmaha, stopped
over on his way home from La Grande
to make a short visit with friends.
We have been fortunate in being
free from measles, that is to say,
compared with the neighboring towns
who have been bothered much with
them. Two or three cases sum up
the list for this city.
C. W. Mumford, who has been vis
iting oubsjde points arrived on to
day's east bound train.
Laurence Allen of the Wallowa
drug Co., has taken charge of the
Co's. store in Lostine, on account of
the loss of the permanent druggist in
that city. Mr. Allen formerly work
ed in the city pharmacy in this city.
John Couch, who has purchased the
J. T. Dryden place in Leap states he
has about 150 acres in fall wheat and
has more to put. in next spring. He
also states that the stock are win
tering fine in ' that section of the
country. . . .
Mr. and Mrs. Hector McDonald en
tertained a few of their friends at
their country home last Tuesday eve
ning. A fine time was reported

arrived in this city from Flora, where
he has been attending to business
matters.

creek, who was recently burnt out,
moved a comfortable house from an
other farm of his to the position
where the other one, once stood. .
Roy Stockwell, who has been rent
ing his father's place, has purchased
a sixty acre tract near Ellensburg,
Wash. He expects to move soon al
so taking his stock and implements
with him.

McCraes' at Willow Springs last Fri
day night. A number of the young
people of this city attended. They re
port a splendid evening was spent.
Stock growers and Farmers Nat
ional Bank has offered five dollars to
the high school pupil who writes the
best essay on "Old Ironsides." A
great many are contending for the
prize.
The K. of P. lodge is going to
change their place of meeting. They
are going to move from the Masonic
to the Odd Fellows hall.
L. Couch made a business trip to
Enterprise Tuesday, returning on the
afternoon train. " "
The Senior class of the W. H. S.
have been diligently practicing twice
a week on their play "The Man From
Nevado." This play is to be given
February '27.
Mr. and Mrs. Castor of Spokane,
are visiting with Mr. and Mrs.' E. A.
Searle of this city.

of the city of La Grande; Oregon.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that
the assessment for the improvement
of Second street, being Improvement
district No.' 63 of the city '.of La
Grande, Oregon, under the provisions
of Ordinance No. 763, Series 1914. An
ordinance declaring .the" cost of im
proving Second street with gravel
bitulithic hard surface pavement from
the north property line of Spring
Avenue to the south line of the cul
vert extending over the irrigation
ditch or canal crossing Second street
through lot 3 in block 18 and lot 4 in
block 5, Grandy's addition to said
city; determining the property bene
fitted thereby, levying an assessment
thereon to defray the costs and ex
penses of said 'improvement; provid
ing for an assessment roll of the same
and directing the entry of such as
sessment roll in the docket of city
liens; providing a time when -' the
same shall become delinquent and re
quiring the city recorder to prepare a
special assessment roll in accordance
with the assessment levied herein, and
to collect such assessment, the same
being improvement district No. 53 in
said city of La Grande, Oregon, is
now in my hands for collection and
tha-same may be paid to me at any
time within (10) ten days from the
26th day of January, 1914, without
penalty, interest or cost; and each
proporty owner Is hereby notified that
on application to the undersigned
within (10) ten days from the 26th
day of January, 1914, which is the
first date of the publication of this
notice, they will be allowed to pay
such assessment in (10) ten annual
installments, the first installment
thereof being due and payable on or
before the 8th day of January, 1915.
If appTication is not made as 'above
specified," the whole amount is due,
payable and will become delinquent
on the 7th day of February, 1914!
