Ladd Canyon, Nov. 17. (Special)
Miss Mary or Mamie Banton, as she
was generally known, surprised her
many friends and neighbors when she
became the bride of Asa Benton on
Thursday, Nov. 6th at 4 o'clock, the
wedding ceremony being performed
by Justice of the Peace Arthur C. Wil
liams -at La Grande. Mrs. Benton is
the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William Banton and was born and has
lived at Ladd Canyon all her life. Her
husband formerly resided in Idaho and
is the prominent son of Mrs. C. A.
Caloway, who has a nice farm home
south of La Grande. Mr. Benton super
intended all the grading for the new
railroad which was built through
Canyon some time ago. Mrs. Benton
only had one letter changed in her
name and it is the wish of her many
i friends that her married life will be
changed as little in regard to happi-
iness. She had a comfortable home and
was a happy-go-lucky girl. They arc
comfortably located on Washington
avenue in La Grande.
Keith, the youngest son of Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Bates, who has been quite
ill with the measles, is getting along
nicely now. ' , '
Mrs. John McCauley returned home
from La Grande yesterday; evening,
where she visited a couple, of days
with relatives and friends. i-'.-'
' Mrs. Charles Dougherty and baby
daughter Dorothy Irene returned to
their home at Enterprise Sunday after!
a two weeks' visit here with her par-j
ents, Mr. and Mrs, Dick Peebler. Mrs.
Peebles is recovering from her recent
illness.'
. Union, Nov. 17. Special) The
parent-teachers circle met a few nights
ago . at the high school auditorium.
The meeting was called to order and
the audience was treated' to mueic by
Miss Clarice Brashear and Miss Mar
garet Callihan. These two young la
dies are too well known to the music
loving public of Union to be introduced
again. Mr. Martin gave an interest
ing talk on "The Use of the Bible in
the Public School." He took the view
that as a literary production of unex
celled merit the educators could not
afford to pass it by.. Saying that "at
all times and all places the Bible is
the first in literature. There is no
other code of morals to take its place.
Bible study is on the increase instead
of decrease, as some would have us
believe. That different states are be
ginning to recommend that the Bible
be used in the schools." Mr. Martin's
remarks were fine ,and well received
and the hearty applause showed that
the audience was in sympathy with
him. . .V .
Superintendent Smith's remarks on
The modern use of the schoolhouse
in the social life of a community" was
very practical and can be used in any
school district today. That the school
house is used about one-third as much
as it should be is a matter of common
knowledge. We hope to see some of
Mr. Smith's suggestions put to use in
our own town this year and see how
.they will work out. Miss Eleanor Davis
concluded the program with an instru
mental solo which received hearty ap
plause. Some of the young men of the town
are forming a club. It will be for so
cial purposes and quite a number have
signified their willingness to join.
They have rented rooms and will hold
meetings quite often.
Born In Union Nov. 11, 1913, to
Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Foster, a son. Mr.
George Foster feels quite aged since
the arrival of his first grandson.
Died At his home at Telocaset on
Nov. 11, 1919,. Thomas Foster, aged
80 years, 2 months and 27 days. The
remains were buried from Cook Bros.'
undertaking parlors on Nov. 13, at
2:30 o'clock by the Masonic lodge, of
which he had long been an honored
member. Tom Foster was a native of
Illinois and came to California in the
early days. He'made the trip around
the Horn in a ship. He followed min
ing for several years and then came
to Oregon in 1862. He worked at
mining for some time and in 1879 ran
a butcher shop in La Grande for some
time. He was married in 1869 to Miss
Hannah Reeves, who survives him. To
this union five children were born, one
of whom preceded his father to the
fetter land. Two of the children were
present at the funeral.- One in Mon
tana and the other in Arizona were
unable to be present. Mr. Foster has
'lived in Grande Ronde valley since
hl864 and in Union and vicinity since
1881.' He bought poultry and eggs for
Hot Lake for some years, until fail
ing health compelled him to desist
He moved out to a farm close to Telo
caset some time ago, where he passed
jaway. Many friends , ana relatives
jnourn his demise. ,
