through the aspirator or the ventil
ators in the form of steam. The lum
ber is permitted to remain in these
kilns for a period of from six to seven
days, during which time the tempera
ture is constant nt about 170 degrees.

process drying is progressing and
the latter shows the amount of heat
actually in tho room. This thermom
eter is constructed like a government
weather thermometer and registers
tho drying process. Heretofore the
boards on the bottom caught the
moisture from those on top and the
drying process was impeded.
Another building is being erected
to take care of the lumber as it comes
from the kiln and in this way the
lumber will always be in the dry.
It is remarkable how the science of
speed has whipped everything up to
this point of efficiency. The big
snake-like galvanized pipe which the

put in larger equipment to handle the

J. W. Simmons to Visit La Grande
Camp of Modern Woodmen
On Thursday, Nov. 20, J. W. Sim
mons, deputy head consul for Oregon,
Modern Woodmen of America, will
visit the La Grande camp on his offi
cial tour of inspection. He will aim
to meet as many camps in the valley
as possible here on that night and has
sent out word to the sister camps to
have representatives here, if possible.
He will pass through La Grande Sat
urday evening enroute to Baker and
return on Thursday morning.
