PORTLAND COMMISSION SUS
PENDS IT SIX MONTHS
lm Portland, Girls Can Work UatU
Bight O'clock at Preaeat "
Further light on the industrial wel
fare commission's rulings is thrown
upon the heretofore vague rulings by
an interview in a Portland paper yes
terday. It says:
The industrial welfare . commission
decided this morning to suspend for
six months its ruling that women shall
not work after 6 o'clock in Portland
mercantile establishments. The em
ployment of women until 8 p. m will
be permitted. The commission's ac
tion and the reasons therefor , were
stated as follows by Miss Caroline J.
Gleason, secretary of the commission,
this morning: i
"At a meeting of the industrial wel
fare commission November 12, 1913,
the commission discussed the mercan
tile ruling, which becomes effective
November 23, 1913, and the following
action was taken:
"It was decided to suspend in part
the ruling prohibiting night work for
women In mercantile establishments
in Portland. ' For six months after the
mercantile ruling goes into effect any
person, firm or corporation owning or
conducting a mercantile establishment
in the city of Portland will be permit
ted to employ women until 8 o'clock
p. m. This partial suspension of the
ruling has been made in response to a
request from the Consumers' league
and others interested in order that the
change may be made gradually and
without hardship to employers, em
ployes or the buying public.
"The commission wishes to make it
plain that the 8 o'clock p. m. dismissal
hour does not apply to women em
ployes in restaurants, confectionaries.
hotels, telephone and telegraph estab
lishments, nor has the commission
contemplated any such ruling in the
past."
This means that merchants may
work clerks at night during the holi
day season.
