Plant In La Grande. ...... . . ; '
- La Grande ia closer the rest of
the world than most of the citizens
are aware. It is not by reason of th
railroad system, good a that is, nor
by reason of the long; distance tele
phone, quick as that method of com
munication has become. All of these
means of communication pale when
compared to the system of making; the
ether the medium of thought trans
fereace. Residents living in the west
part of the dty have seen the poles
and the wires of La Grande wireless
apparatus,' but have never been made
aware of the fact that all communica
tions that are, sent out within a radi
as of 2000 miles, are caught by this
system and acquaint the operator with
the newest happenings of the world.
One would suppose that by reason of
the hills lying; around the valley like
a huge barrier this communication
could not take place. But the hills are
no impediment to the secrets of elec
tricity. Distress signals coming from
ship in dire straits come to this man
of La Grande and before the
United Press flash the news over the
country over many miles of wire and
click it off on a telegraph instrument,
this man knows the gl(,t of the hap
pening. From San Francisco he gets
reports that would make money to one
relying on quick changes of the mar
ket.' He knows of the approaching
storm .or the sudden change in the
weather, but as valuable as the infor
mation might be to some one he is not
licensed to divulge the contents of his
messages to the public. - This is one of
the factors that tells the inquiring
man that the science is still in its in
fancy and that the government must
step in and put restrictions upon the
sacrificing genius of some young am
ateur lest the companies ' that have
spent vast sums of money in the equip
ment of big plants be robbed of the
emoluments of the business by having
amateurs pick up and sell to the pub
lic statements that are for particular
persons. In other words it means
that they have not slcceeded so far in
that they have not succeeded so far in
sending the message to one particular.
station without running the risk" of
having 'everybody with an equipment
catch up the same message.
in the corner of a bedroom can be
found this machine, and in the home
of a local optician, O. M. Heacock, liv
ing on East Main street
As far as the equipment is concern
ed it is just as complete as that of any
Marconi station, the only difference
being that the latter is vastly "more
powerful and capable of sending ' a
message a. greater distance.' ;
For the purpose of giving the lay
mind some kind of an idea how wire
less messages are sent, the Observer
sent a man to interview the owner and
get a brief description of the machin
ery. . The sending appartus consists
of a key like the one used in every
.telegraph office. . On an upper shelf
is placed a transformer, better called
an intensifier, the purpose- of which is
to intensify the current and store the
storage battery with power. This
battery in turn charges the wires with
electric life. When thiB has been done,
which requires but an instant, the op
erator is ready to send his dots and
dashes. These dots and dashes cause
vibrations of the ether and are trans
mitted according to their intensity in
every conceivable direction, just like
the waves of the air.' On this same
shelf there si a small machine having
a rotary wheel with cylindrical plups
in it .
When the key is klicking off the
dots and dashes a greenish spark is
seen to cross from the rapidly rotat
ing wheel. A constant hum as of
some kind of buzzing is the result.
The receiving machine is different
In the first place there is a contriv
ance that enables the operator. to dis
cover if there are any other waves. By
adjusting the same he is enabled to in
tensify the report or to diminish it 1
Another machine called a tuner is
an instrument consisting of a num
ber of rounds of wrapped copper wire
around a cylinder. The purpose of
this instrument is to equalize the wire
length of the sending station with that
of the receiving station by moving a
Bmall hand like indicator on the wrap
ped cylinder to increase or decrease
the length. ;
Most of the machinery has been
made by Mr. Heacock himself and
operate perfectly. During the in
terview he connected with Ed Riesland
of La Grande who is also operating a
wireless outfit and the tranemiesion
worked like clock work, .. ..
There are wireless stations in Mil-
Ition, Pendleton, Walla Walla, Union,
j North Powder and Halfway, all of
which are in communication with the
local station. They are Uevneed am
ateure and cannot enrage in any kind
of commercial .eettmunication without
getting a special permit.
The local station has a receiving ae
paeKy of 2000 miles and a sending ca
pacity of 60 miles and more. In the
near future Mr. .Heacock- intends, to
raise the poles of his outfit to in
crease the sending capacity. Be calls
is his plaything but understands all of
the fine points.
KIDNEYS AND
BLADDER BOTHER
Take Salta to Flush Kidneys
Neutralize Irritating Acids.
and
Kidney and Bladder weakness result
from uric acid, says a noted authority,
lit kidneys filter this acitd from the
blood and pass it on to the bladder,
where it often remains to irritate and
irf .r., causing a burning, scalding
sensation, or setting up an irritation
at the neck of the bladder, obliging you
to seek relief two or three times dur
ing the night. The sufferer is in con
stant dread, the water passes some
times with a scalding sensation and is
very profuse; again, there is difficulty
in avoiding it
Bladder weakness,- most folks call
it ,because they-can't control urination.
While it js extremely annoying and
sometimes very painful, this is really
one of the most simple ailments to
overcome. Get about four .ounces of
Jad Salts from your pharmacist and
take a tablespoonful in a glass of
water .before breakfast, continue this
for two or three days. This will neu
tralize the acids in the urine so it no
longer is a osurce of irritation to the
blodder and urinary organs which then
act normally again.
Jad Salts is inexpensive, -harmless,'
and is made from th oxacid of grapes
and lemon juice, combined with lithia
and is used by thousands of folks who
are seubject to urinary disorders caus
ed by uric acid irritation.- Jad Salts
is splendid for kidneys and' causes no
bad effects whatever.
Here you have a pleasant, efferves
cent Iithia-water drink, which quickly
relieves bladder trouble.
