TEACHING 8 EX HYGIENE.
The bureau of education of the fed
eral department of the interior has
taken up the discussion of the ques
tion of teaching sex hygiene in the
public schools and after reviewing in a
recent bulletin the arguments put f or
word both by the advocates and the op
position to the movement announces
its conclusion , that the question is
about to assume national importance.
There is nothing startling in th an
nouncement To our way of think-'
ing it has already reached this point
It has been tried in many schools in
the larger cities, its teaching is in
vogue in some schools and is advocat
ed by educational authorities in con
trol of others. Medical men, univer
sity professors and noted educators
are giving it the deepest thought r
. not a few of them have announced
their conclusions.
After all has been said the fact is
potent that parents are not meeting
their obligations to their children in
the way of imparting the information
that would save many of them from
disgrace through ignorance;1 that the
"social emergency" as President Fos
ter of Reed college terms it, is , the
indirect if -not the direct result of
gross ignorance of the laws of na
ture; that, since the parents have
largely failed in their duty, some oth
er way should be provided to warn the
children of the dangers that beset
them, and that, failing in the home,
the school seems to be the only propr
place left for imparing this all-important
information.
The city df Chicago's board of edu
cation has sought to get around the
question by appropriating money to
provide lectures on sex hygiene to
parents and groupB of high school stu
dents, with the ultimate idea of ex
tending sex instruction to the ele
mentary schools if the experiment
with older pupils proves satisfactory.
Perhaps this method holds the solu
tion. There are many of the parents
who need such instruction and high
school pupils who need it no less. But
if conditions in the high schools are
as they have been pictured by men who

CHESNIMNUS STOCKMAN A
TRUE SPORTSMAN.
One of the most interesting charac
ters in the buckaroo world of today
ia'S. ,T. Tippetts, of Chesninmus.
Twenty yenrs ago he went into the
inland country and entered the cattle
business. Today he has more money
than he needs, but money is not of
much interest to Tippetts. Hewn joys
life; lives close to nature and loves
the broad expanse of the rugged coun
try He has raised a bunch of boys in
that free air and everyone oi them
are sons of their daddy, when it comes
to loving nature and nature's way of
doln'f things.
At the Enterprise fair the Tippets
family had a good time and they en
tertained everyone who attended the
fair. One boy bulldogged the steer,
another threw the rope in the roping
contest, another rode the wildest
bucking horse on the ground, and when
something a little extra hard was -to
perform the old gentleman would take
u hand himself, for he is an adept in
the buckaroo business. " - v . .
'Ihe Tippetts relay horses were at
the Union, county fair but owing to a
bad track and bad weather, none of
ihe relay string got a fair chance to
show what they could do. Mr., Tip
potts rode the string himself.
