Yesterday afternoon the fair gates
swung wide and the crowd from Un
ion lend the' way to the erounds. fol
lowed by many La Granders who want
ed to go rain or shine and help keep
up the sunshine spirit. The Unjon
bunch was "sure alive to things" and
kept bells ringing and its laughter
echoed over the hall mingled with the
strains of band music. The carnival
band was on the scene and lent every
effort toward a good time by playing
some of the most lively of popular
ragtime pieces and also some excellent
selections from the master composers.
After a goodly number had arirved
and the hall had been fully inspected
the crowd adjourned to the grand
stand, where a few races were put on
to the pleasure of those attending. To
sit close to the track and watch the
drivers eat mud, was one of the fun
niest happenings of the day. The
horses showed their true colors as
"mud horses" when they waded around
the track for pretty good time through
a sea of soft mud. None of the horses

Belgrade, Oct. 10. When the rrtByor
of Mokrilug became ill no suitable
grown man could be found to take his
place, as all had gone to war. It was
decided to let his" 15-year-old son have
a try at the job. The lad performed
the duty so successfully that now his
father has recovered the ciizens re
fuse to restore the old man to the
post. They declare that the boy not
only more thoroughly appreciates the
responsibilities of the office, but has
greater authority over the commun-ity.

' Wallowa Horses Here.
Among the .horsemen of the north
west that have been tied up in. La
Grande by the rain this week and have
had but little chance to show what
they had, are several Wallowa coun
ty horses. ' In this regard, the Record
Chieftain of Enterprise remarks:
Wallowa county has ' sent some
thoroughbreds to help make the Un
ion county fair a success this week.
They will ensure some good numbers
on the program, at La Grande, and
they will certainly' win their share of
the events in which they enter.
Two strings of relay horses have
been sent out, one of Clifford Wade
and Harry Mays, and the other by J.
M. Blakely. Wade will ride his own
string, giving the La Grande people a
chance to see some real relay work,
with the rider . changing horses in
lightning time. Keily will ride Mr.
Blakely 's horses, and if he handles
them as well as he did during the
last day of the race here, the contest
will be everybody's race until the very
finish. Kelly had started away, but
Mr, Blakely reached him at La
Grande and engaged him for the Un
ion county race. Wadewill have1 one
advantage, in that the same men who
have caught and held his horses here
will be with' him in La Grande. Two
s( lings of pony express racers have
been taken out by the same men

sent out two teams for the Roman

fast stock and will give a race that

west border of town. Mrs. Clayton
sues in her own behalf and as guar
dian of her four children. She asks
$10,000 on her own account; $5,000 for
each of three .minor children, and $4,
000 for Lloyd,' the oldest son. .
Mr. Clayton was employed tq look
after the motor in the pumping sta
tion put in to raise water to the farm
land of Carl Roe, on the top of the
hill. He went to shut off the elec
tricity in the early evening of Aug
ust 5, and did not return to his home.
A son . found him dead in the plant,
near the 50-horse power motor.
The complaint, filed by Boyd &
Fairchild of Enterprise, associated
with Bennett,. Sinott & Galloway of
The Dalles, alleges that, the pumping
plant was in a small, dark shed; that
the floor was of cemenjt and wood and
was "generally wet and in condition to
conduct electricity, which made the
building a very dangerous place to
work unless switched and devices for
connecting tne plant were thoroughly
insulated and protected." Sufficient
insulation and protection were not pro
vided, the complaint asserts. Enter
