I In a sermon on Luke 19:41 the pas
tor of Zion Lutheran church yester
day morning made extensive refer
ences to "Civic Righteousness." Bas
ing his remarks on Christ's lamenta
tions over Jerusalem when he entered
that city for the last time, just pre-
, vious to crucifixion, he said in part:
i "The real cause of the tears of
Christ must be sought in the realm
: of spiritual things, rather than in the
political and material misfortunes
j they forshadowed. To Christ it was
'the unrepenting, sin-loving and self
righteous attitude of the nation that
I caused him to lament. But those of
us who live in a time alter Titus the
Roman general laid siege to and ut
terly destroyed Jerusalem just 40
years later we know of the million
corpses covering the ground and the
dessolutions and undescribable scenes
of that most awful destruction in the
history of wan, to us the signifi
cance of Christ s tears must also have
a political, a material bearing. The.
corruption, deceitfulness and dishon
esty of the nation resulted in its own
annihilation, just like low motives
and despising of truth and honesty
always result in disaster eventually.

reform has made great strides dur
ing the last decade, but individually

by step the abuses against God. and
man have had to be crowded off the
stage of American life, in-so-far as
any victories have been won. "

La Grande Students at State Institu-
tion United Ask Support.
Eugene, Ore., Sept. 29. (To the
Editor of Observer). -The Eastern
Oregon students at the University of
Oregon, take this means of express
ing their regret that extension of the
university's facilities has been delay
ed by the referendum.
We are in daily contact with condi
tions at the university and realize how
difficult it is becomine to handle the
fast increasing student body without
a corresponding increase in the facil
ities. ,
, The university has had no new
building for seven years, and the last
structure erected was a libraryr. The
appropiations under the referendum
call for $100,000 for a ney administra
tion and class room building and $75,
000 to make extensions and repairs to
four other buildings. We know this
added room is greatly needed, the at
tendance at the university having
doubled since the last new building
was put up. .
Deady hall and Villard hall, the
principal class room buildings now,
were built in 1876 and 1885, respectively.
Jtride in our state university and a
desire to see' it helped rather than
hindered in becoming the greatest in
stitution it is destined to be, able to
aid thousands as it has aided us,
prompts us, in convention this day
assembled, to agree as follows: '
Resolved, That we urge all the peo
ple of our respective communities to
register without fail and to support
the university on November 4th in the
two matters that are so vital to its
continued progress, and
Resolved, That we view with cor-

Good Roads Campaign Starts.
Denver, Sept. 25. Commercial and
good roads organizations of Colorado
today started a movement prepara
tory' to launching a general western
campaign for the permanent improve
ment of roads, simultaneously with
the entry into Colorado of a large
party of automobilist3 from St. Jos
eph and Kansas City, Missouri. The
motorists are inspecting the Rock
Island highway from St. Joseph td
Denver. They are placing markers
at all cross-roads and forks between
the two cities. The highway at Col

route from Kansas City and from Col
