For several hours Monday the Board
f Trade building looked like a kitten
aHew. It was the most cattif ied sky
. scraper on the Pacific coast for the
. onceand'the time being.' The densit;
. f feline population was what might
: ie called saturated. The conversation
al display was in full keeping with
ffie occasion. There were catlets and
' catcalls sufficient to go around, and
aobody witl an office in the building
had any cause for saying he had been
neglected.
. It all came about because H. T.
Shelley, the cigar man in the lobby of
the building, let slip a little word that
he was fond of cats and was anxious
to get a nice milk-fed little kitty, of
good pedigree and with the proper cre
dentials. John Mann, the printer, and
H. K. Shellaby and W. L. Grahama
couple of friends, heard of Shelly's in
finite longing for a furry, purry pet
so they got busy. ' , -! v ;.
"I think there are about three or
four.' doren out In my barn on the
ranch," reflected Mann. ;:"
"I believe our neighbors could scare
up about 30 of 'em on a pinch," add
ed Graham. ; : P
("I'll help some if I have to buy 'em,"
put in Shellaby. . . ,
Altogether the trio rounded up
about half a hundred kittens, some
with their mothers and some without,
and at an appointed hour, Johnnie
Mann got his automobile, assembled
the exhibits and toted them down to'
the Board of Trade building. A fourth
conspirator was added to the list, and
he concocted an excuse for getting

Shelley but of his shop for about ten
minutes. The cats ' were ' properly
placed, and when the cigarman return
ed, the lobby was alive with fur-balls.
With the aid of a uad of jani
tors, elevator boys, tenant and volun
teer forces, most of the varmints were
corralled in the course of the day, but
Shelley hasn't expressed any consum
ing desire to establish a cat farm
since.

Shedd Is "Dairy Center.'
Albany, Ore., Aug. 28. As a re
sult of a. slight dispute betweenShedd
and Scio, two towns of this county,
concerning the right to the title of
"The Dairy City," .the Shedd Commer
cial club, at a recent meeting, decided
to yielfl the recently adopted slogan
for that town to Scio, and adopt an
other slogan, "The Dairy Center," up
on the contention of the Scio Commer
cial club that the former sclogan had
been previously adopted by that city.
