Since Weather Hag Cleared, Farmers

Several, of' the threshing machines in
the valley, have been compelled to
stop work since they caught up with
the headers, that have been delayed
due to the rain. Many of the farm

Miss Maggie Rugan is very sick
with the typhoid fever. The young
lady has been ill several weeks but
does not show the least sign of recov

The Ladies' Aid society gave an ice
cream social Saturday evening. It
was well attended, and a great suc
cess in general
Mrs. Thelbert Choat and son, Vir
gil, have been spending a few days
with the former's mother, Mrs. Jim
Elliott, of Elgin. .
Everyone is glad to see E. Fisher
able to be out again. His fractured
hip has improved sufficiently, that he
eets around with very Uttle aid irom
his crutches.
Mr. and Mrs. John Niederer , made
a visit trip to Elgin the Tatter part of
the week.
Miss Effie Sea has just recently
taken down with the typhefid fever.
The Misses Ruth and Audra Oliver
of Portland, have been visiting with
friends and relatives near Summer
ville, the latter part of the week.
Miss Anna Neiderer who has been
staying with her aunt, Mrs. August
Hug, for the past two weeks, return
ed to her home Sunday. During her
stay in La Grande she went to Telo
caset to straighten but certain matters
regarding school, since she intends to
teach there this winter.
Miss Annie Sanderson spent Sun
day with her parents.
Marcia Becker, who has been at La
Grande all spring and summer, return
ed to her home near Summerville, last
week. '
On returning home, after four years
spent in Portland and Corvallis, Victor
Niederer says that the Grande Ronde
valley looks pretty good to him.

Harry Pollock, manager of Welsh, is
just as certain that his charge will be
the next champion, and along this line
is manning out the campaign. Im-
, mediately after the battle, in the event
of Welsh winning, Pollock and Welsh
will start for England and Wales, tak-
ing a moving film of the bout with
I them. They will exhibit in the Brit
I ish isles, and en return to New
York, where Pollock has practically ac
cepted an offer for'a Thanksgiving day
match with McFarland, provided the
latter shows any inclination to male
185 pounds at 6 o'clock. Welsh's next
bout will be Christmas day, on the
coast, and every holiday until he re
tires or is defeated, will see the Brit
on in the ring against the best of his
opponents. '
