EUROPE WILL GET REAL FRUIT
. THIS YEAR.
Shipment From Yakima to Be'Among
First Sent Out In 1913.
Portland, Ore., Aug. 13 Europe is
going to get a taste , of real peaches
irom tne racmc northwest. A car
load shipment from Yakima is being
prepared for shipment under the di
rection of the Northwestern Fruit ex
change of this city. - .-. ":T
The shipmtmt will consist of a car
load of Elbertai and only the best
quality fruit will be includeed. Spe
cial packing will be necessary in or--der
to insure arrival of the supplies in
the best possible condition. While the
regulation boxes will be utilized, the
layers will have a wood-fiber cushion
to insure them against rough handl
ing and- possible damage in transit
'across the Atlantic.
This will be the first time thai arty
i real serious attempt has been made
by fruit shipping interest to send a
big supjT.y of Pacific northwest peach'
-.es to Europe. While other shipments,
i have' gone forward, they have been
i more in the nature of a trial than any
J thing else. This will be the first time
that shipment will be on a real com-
mercial basis. The peach shipment is
J not being made to Englcnd because of
' the fizzle of a former shipment by oth
er interests, England is not a suit
able1 market for Pacific northwest
peaches because the fruit is not gen
erally known there'. It is stated on
every good authority that not more
than one out of ten people in England
have ever seen a peaih, outsids of a

OLD HUNTER
RECITES TILE
EL KHUNTING IX THIS SECTION
PICTURED.
Habits of Elk and Their Exciting
Chases Told at North Powder.
The following story taken from the
North Powder News, is a tale of an
elk hunter such as one's "grandfathers
were familiar with and which was
many times enacted in this country be
fore the population became thicker.
Captain W. F. Haines, who crossed
the plains in 1875, realtes the fol
low' ? hcocunt of an elk hunt:
September 1, 1876, old John Powell,
an old time hunter, said to me: "On
this day the elk begin to whistle."
"How do they whistle," said I. He
picked up a .44 caliber cartridge, put
it up to hie mouth, and blew in it'a
long as he could hold his breath, ami
said: "That is the kind of a no'so
they will make, about daylight, gen
erally. About sunset on a hot dir
this lime of the year the sume old bu;k
will go to a mountain spring or mud
hole high up in the mountains. wh
he will WlliJiW liko a hog." When I
told James A. PUcJior and my oldest
son, 13 yeSH old, old John Powell's
story' they wereyery anxious for a
hunt. On September 3" W fenced out
grain stacks and on the 4tfrjv Pack
ed three horses and started, reaching
Anthony creek lakes about 4 o'clock,
where we ate lunch. Jim and Willy
went up the mountain, while I and the
dog, Rover, went down on a little
meadow, 2 miles from camp. I saw a
black spot 6 feet across. That was a
wallow. I sat down on a big rock with
the gun on my lap, In about' 20 min
utes 4 heard a dead pine limb break.
I got the direction and saw Rover anx
iously looking the same way. I thump

peach, the quality of which cannot be . -,,.,. , . , ,
duplicated by outdoor grown stuff.
Naturally such peaches sell at an ex
tremely high price, but as the only
consumers are the nobility, they can
afford to pay the price.
There is every indication that con
siderable business in peaches will be
developed by Pacific northwest Inter
ests. After the Panama canal is open
ed a heavy volume of business is like-1
ly because the fruit can then be ship
ped direct, thereby saving' much time,
money as well as loss in spoilage in
transit over the present long distance
shipment.
Local selling interests ai'e working
on the theory that a very good busi
ness in deciduous fruits can be estab
lished with t' tropical countries that
no-,v very little of the temperate
zones products at this time. This
will give a new trade channel for most
of the so-called soft fruits of the Pa
cific northwest. .and may eventually
help to stimulate prices here.
