La Grande.
La Grande uses more cement than
any three cities and towns in Eastern
Oregon and Idaho combined, excepting
Boise and Weiser. The commercial
importance of La Grande is the best in
Oregon and Idaho outside of Portland
and Boise' and is approached by Idaho
Falls only from the smaller cities'
sources. There is better normal bus
iness and the normal business standard
is higher, in La Grande than any city
in Oregon outside of Portland.
These encomiums were chanted in
La'Grande today by "Red Devil" Ed
wards, the well known drummer, who
sells Red Devil ' cement to Eastern
Oregon and Idaho. He said it withj
"malice of forethought" too, for a ;
group of men were discussing condi-!
tions when the commercial rank of
towns came up. j
"Last year we sold 52 carloads of,
cement to La "Grande. This is just our!
brand' and does not refer to the other j
grades of cement sent in here.
"For the past three years and again'
this year, the trade has been normal-
ly excellent. At Weiser there was
one enormous order that put that town'
up in the front rank of cement using
towns, yet the trade there is not asj
normal and continuous as it is here.
Boise alone can keep up with La
drummer.
"Permanent improvements make a
town and it is permanent improvement
that has been going on in La Grande.
I have no hesitancy in saying that
among traveling men who make East
ern Oregon, the stale at large or any
of the northwest states, that La
Grande is in the forefront of them all
commercially." .
