sugar was brought into continental
United States in the fiscal year just
ended than in any other year in the
history of the country, according to the
latest figures of the bureau of foreign
and domestic commerce, department of
commerce. The quantity of sugar en
tering from foreign countries and our
own islands in the year ended June 30,
1913, was six and a half billion pounds
and exceeded by five hundred million
pounds the figures of the former high
record year, 19l2i when the imports
from foreign countries and the islands
were, in round terms, six billion pounds
Of the six and a half billion from Ha
waii, three quarters of a billion from
Porto Rico, nearly a quarter of a bil
lion from the Philippines, and the re
mainder chiefly from South America.
Java, which has in some years sent
us as much and one billion pounds of
sugar hut thirteen million pounds
in 1913; while the quantity from Eu
rope, chiefly beet sugar, was one hun
dred eighty-two billion pounds
against but six and a half million in
1912, but being materially less than;
in certain earlier years, the total in
quantity of bo-1- suzar imported in
1901 having been 003,683,078 pounds,
and in 1897, 1,865,567,495 pounds.
In value, however, the year's' re
ceipts of sugar fell nearly 30 million
dollars below those of the last year,
despite the fact that the quantity re
ceived was 500 million pounds greater. !
The total of sugar imported from for
eign countries during the fiscal yearj
1913, was $104,639,823; and of that!
coming from Hawaii, $36,607,820; from;
Porto Rico, $26,619,158; and from the
Philippines, $4,593,199; the latter, how-;
ever, being included in tne iigures oi
imports from foreign countries. The
