- The long anticipated summer school
is in session, affirms the Joseph Her
ald. ' The faculty promised is here
and in one day's time everything was
, in running order. The second day the
classes met regularly. Those present
as members of the faculty are Ed-
ward H. Todd, vice president of Wil-j
lamette University; James Matthew,
head of department of mathematics
of Willamette; Florian Von Eschen
head of department of chemistry and
physics of Willamette; E. L. Coe, prin
cipal of Cook County high school; O. C
Whitney, principal of the Bryant
school in Tacoma; Supt. Conley of this
county and Mrs. E. L. Coe, who has

' Students have registered from
Marshfield, Tillamook, Antelope and
Wallowa county in Oregon; from Boise
Caldwell and New Plymouth, Idaho;
and one from the central part of
Washington. It is a representative
class of students and mainfest a de
sire to work. Ten thousand advertis
ing bulletins of the university were
sent out and there have been write
ups in papers reaching hundreds of
thousands of people who never knew
of Joseph and Wallowa lake before.
The O.-W. R. & N. company has plac
ed the event on folders and lent ev
ery assistance possible.
The stock show to be held on Fri
day and Saturday of next week, July
25 and 26, is a direct outgrowth of the
coming of the summer school. Dr
Todd has given much time and at
tention to getting the persons togeth
er for these gatherings. He has lent
his inspiration and counsel to the
planning of the Epworth League in
stitute which is in session this week
All of these are afafirs of such a char-
acter as to be desired by any com
! muhity. tl is hoped that all may be
come permanent annual gatherings in
Joseph. They are worth landing..
The Tuesday and Friday evenings
of the six weeks' session are all plan
ned. This week the Epworth League
institute will provide prominent speak- j
ers each evening. Next week on Tues
day evening Dr. Todd will lecutre on
"Why Grow Up?" and Mr. C. L. Smith
will lecture on Friday evening on
"Home Building." The lectures all to
be without admission fee. The trus
tees of the Methodist church have of
fered the. use of the auditorium foi
lectures and entertainments, and the
proffer has been accepted.
Dr. Homan, president of Willamette
and W. Eugene Knox, dean of the col
lege of expression of Nebraska Wes
leyan University, are to be heard in
the near future. ,
