Following' is the wording of the
law upon which the order is based:
Chapter 394, General Laws of Ore
gon, for 1913, reads: Be it enacted by
the people of the State of Oregon,
Be it enacted by the legislature as
sembly of the State of Oregon.
Section 1. That section 6458 of
Lord's Oregon Laws be and the siyme
is hereby amended so as to read as fol
lows: Sec. 6458. It shall be the duty of
.each road supervisor in each road dis
trict in this state, in addition to the
duties heretofore prescribed by law
to ascertain from time to time and
know whether or not there is in his
district any weed known as the Rus
sian thistle, the Canada thistle, the
Chinese thistle, or sisymbrium altiss
inum (called white or Jim Hill mus
tard), cockel burr (known as the dag-
! ger cockel burr), atrisplex argentia
(called silver salt brush), and he snail
as he ascertains that there is any of
such weed, and before any thereof had
shed its bloom or commenced to form
the seed, serve or cause to be serv
upon the owner of the land or the
land adjoining a road or highway to
the center thereof, if he be known and
residing within the county, and if not.

adjoining said premises, upon which
said weeds or thistles may be, a no
tice in writing notifying said .owner
or occupant of the existence of said
thistle, or weed or weeds, and in such

if there be no occupant of such land
upon which such weed may be growing
then such notice shall be served by
posting in three conspicuous places
upon said premises a copy of such no
tice duly certified to be such by said
road supervisor. .
Section 2. That Section 6460 ol
Lord's Oregon Laws be and the same
is hereby amended so as to read as
follows:
Sec. 64G0. If such owner or occu
pant shall fail or refuse for ten days
after being so notified of the existence
of such weed or weeds upon said land
or said land adjoining a road or high
way, to completely remove same, it
shall be the duty of such road super
visor and he shall have authority, to

calling to his assistance such help as
he mav deem necessary and cause said
weed or weeds to be extirpated from
said land or road or highway, in such
a manner that it will be most effect
ive and work the least injury to the
land, but that will destroy said weed
and its seed and prevent the same
from in any way spreading to any aa

As usual the Christian Indians this
year observed the fourth of July with
a big dinner. There were 150 present
for the spread, 20 of the number be
ing white people. At the dinner 250
pounds of fresh salmon was served.
Following the dinner many interest
ing talks were made by people present
and the Indian talks were interpreted
for the benefit of the whites.
