Telephone Satem fut of Commission
Elgin, Junk 10. (Special) Elgin
has for the past few days been enjoy
ing some hard rains which' were ao
companied jirith severe lightning. ' Al
though the' rains have done no dam
age, the lightning has wronght 'eer
ious consequences. ' ,' ' '; '
. Lightning struck the telegraph line
and carried the charge into the depot
where' it started a fire.i; The fire
started among the heavy files and
tariff books and the start was- no
doubt slow. " The entire' interior, of
the main office and operating room
was charred and the fixtures ( were
damaged. The many records were
destroyed and a complete wreck' to
the office was 'effected. ' -
. "The "fire department was on the
scene but a very short time after the
fire was discovered,' they struck . the
fire at the right time, to prevent the
destruction of the entire building. .,
...The lightning put almost the en
tire system of the Elgin division of
the - Eastern - Oregon Co-operative
Telephone association out of working
order, causing ' the switchboard to
have to be rewired and discomposing
the many subscribers for a few days.
