Improved Type of Mill to be Built

As if by magic, the Baker White
Pine Lumber company will rebuild
its planing mill at once, on the site
of the one destroyed by fire.
Already architects . are on the
ground planning' for the -flew struc
ture and machine men are here tak
ing orders. for new equipment
The company plans for a larger
and more modern structure than the
one burned. The engine room will be
built of concrete, 250 feet from the
site " of the planing mill, " and there
will be absolutely no danger of fire
from the boilers., The mill will be
biult as near ' fire proof as is pos
sible. ' ' , ' ; '
.v The Ins was estimated at
$90,000. The entire plant was con
sumed. It was practically covered by
insurance. ' C v ',. . . . :
' The planing mill and box factory
was one of the best, if not the best
equipped in the state. Within the
past few days machinery to the value
of $10,000 had. been ..installed, Over
100 men are out of work until the
new plant starts. , ' .
s The fire was discovered by H,, J.
King, engineer of the cdmpanV at
5:60 o'clock. He tried to fight it out
with a hose and, v was burned 'badly
about the arms and face. He remain
ed long enough in the fiery furnace
to sound the whistle. . ,
' Upon the arrival of the department
which made the run in one minute
and 60 seconds,'- the flames had
spread to all parts of the building' and
their efforts were devoted to saving
the office and outstanding buildings.
The entire plant, was gone at 6:30
o'clock.

stalled by the company and complete
ly filled with high grade lumber was
saved. , . ..

has much work to do there in the
interests of a lawsuit which is to be
waged during the coming term of

Bert and Ralph Dunbar came into
Enterprise Monday from the Dry Sal
mon country,' 27 miles from here.
They returned to their homesteads
Wuednesday morning with a load of
grain. - They reported the roads ex
ceedingly rough and , unsatisfactory,
for hauling. This fact has delaped
the transportation of much lumber
which' is . needed , for the building of
numerous houses or the new inflow
of settlers in that region of Wallowa
county. y , .,
Mrs. 0. J. Roe will entertain the
Bay View club at a 6 o'clock dinner
