LA GRANDE MANAGER GIVEN
PRETTY COMPLIMENT, i
Statesman Considers Spuds Strong
- . Contenders for Flag.
: .j : (Boise Statesman.)
:Carl King has kept his promise
made to the people of La Grande,
Early in the season he told them he
would get together a ball team that
would be a pennant contender, and he
has done so.
The Spuds may not win the flag.
but they will be fighting all the. way,
and they are good enough so that it
will not be 'surprising if they finish
in the first division. The club has
some weak -spots, but it also has some
strong ones. King is .still looking for
men to patch with, and if he gets the
ones, he wants the Spuds will be eas-
. ily one of the strong' teams of the
circuit' ; ''.
i -Is Good General. -',
. Carl has disappointed the pessim
ists who said when he took the team
that he was too young to run it He
has shown natural, ability as a lead
er, and has his club well in hand.
; On the field Carl is one of the clev
erest generals in the league. He is a
past master at shifting his men to
the points where they will do the
most good. He keeps his soldiers
ball, but he worked against a com
bination ef bard luck. nd with the
hone club hvpnotiied by' Fitchner' he
was in the same v position .'as the
fanner playing the little shell game
'no chance to win. .

fighting all the time, and has a facul

' Fights Hard for Gassea. ;'
Nobody in the league fights harder
for a game than Carl does, and the
fighting part counts. , .. Some , of the
fans who do not understand his man
ner are disposed to call him a crab,
but Carl is not a crab. He is simply
urging his men on in his' own way.
They understand him' and like him,
Just notice any player King talks
to in the game. To the stands it may
look as though that particular man
is being roasted. Maybe he is, but just
watch his play after that and see if
he doesn't work better for what King
told him. i '
Carl is a success as a manager and
his team will win a lot of games be
fore-the season is over.; ' -
On Your Knees.
I remember climbing the Welsshorn.
above Zerniatt valley.' with two guides.
My leading guide stood aside to. let Die

long labor, of the climb over and ex
hilarated by the thought, of the great
view awaiting me, but forgetful of the
high gale that was blowing on the other
side of the recks, sprang eagerly up
and stood erect o see tbe view. Tbe
