CLASS UTTER ALL ODER
OPEN NG
Bert Fitchner handed yesterday's
pcncr with Walla Walla to the Bears
on a silver platter in the initial can
ticle and then settled down and
showed Bade's cinnamons how he
conld do it. For eight inning Fitch
ncr's work was superb, about as good
as it will be the pleasure of the
home guard to see, but the disaster
tad been done and while fitchner
nnd the men behind him held the
Walla Wallans away from the pan
for the remainder of a pretty game,
La Grande couldn't muster scoring
strength off that youth Shader. The
'kits.' t.v-'.er, however, had more
frequent SOS signals going and
his support answered quicker than
the Carpathia did when the Titanic
Bank.- A pretty piece of luck in the
first introduced to the fans the first
triple play of the season, nipping hi
the early stages a rally off Grader
that threatened to overcome the
Bears' lead. Two runs were across
before the famoua triple. "
Harmon drew a pass and Lund-
strum singled in the first inning Da
vis walked and Shoely's hit was
played back to the plate catching
Harmon. The bases were still full
and Martini walked forcing in Lund
strum, on the top of which Fitch
ner heaved a woolly one on which
Sheely scored and when Johnson s
hit to Miller, the new shortstop, was
hooted Sheely scored. That tells
the story for Walla Wallu's point of
view. ; ,
Corbin drew a pass like "Cotton"
before him, and when Miller singled,
Druhot bunted down the. third base
line safely, Nadeau scoring Corbin
and Miller with a neat single. King
hit a hot one out to Shader who
tossed King out at first, Sheoly heav
ing to Lundstrum catching Nadeau
there and touching Druhot out com
pleting the triple. :- ' '
La Grande got two on in the sec
end but a snappy double cut off all
chances. At this stage, both pitch
ers settled down and went to the
near uncorking a furore in the last
of the ninth when he went to sec
ond on a high infield hit but two
were down ahead of him, and though
Jamison batted for Walters there
was no "starting anything" in sight.
The game ended there, better than
200 paid admissions having seen a
hum ding game win or lose. The

SUMMARY.
Naughton celebrated his return to
baseball after just a week out with
an injured ankle by playing a mighty
clever game at second. That is his
position apparently. He shut? off a
sure hit yesterday and handled sev
eral assists beautifully.
Miller, Yakima's offcast infielder,
helped lose the game in the first in
ning and then pulled a clean hit and
a sharp piece of fielding when he
backed up Corbin on Brown's hard
drive to Corbin.
Many wonder why fielders mis
judge long flies on the local ground
the way they do. The fielders stand
on the edge of a deep gulley, ready
to step back or ahead as the flies
drop. Frequently, as was the ca3e
with Peteron yesterday, they setp
back one step to get under a ball but
by stepping back, lower their reach
several inches and the ball goes over.
The fielders can't be blamed for it.
Walla Walla didn't know what
Shader could do had no idea he
would win. Well, what youngster
ever pitched a better game?

Fans who saw yesterday's game
and they average as many as any of
the towns along the line -have tried
to force themselves to" admit that
Walla Walla has superior team over
La Grande. They came away con
vinced they had a wrong hunch.
Walla Walla has won, say men who
have seen them play, on just such
streaks of luck as broke yesterday,
repeatedly. The sort of ball Mana

to see and they are getting it.
Three games is all that La Grande
baseball followers will get to see of
the present series. Because of the
big Elks' conclave at Walla Walla,
the last of the week, when the new
home there is to be dedicated, the
Bears were very anxious to be home
and' in return will transfer the last
three games of the mid-June series
at Walla Walla to La Grande. That
will be June 13-15 inclusive. The
transfer to Walla Walla was done in
consideration of funds for one thing,
as Walla Walla will be full of Elks
and expenses for the trip will he
paid by the Walla Walla club, and
from a monetary standpoint the
transfer will be profitable. Under
ordinary circumstances, La Grande
supports her club as well as Walla
Walla. - i;

BAKER BEATS YAKIMA
Diggers Hit Well While Yaks Are
Held to Four Bingles.
Baker, Ore., May 20. (Special)
Baker took tne nrst game of th
scries with North Yakima today: by
srore of 8 to 5. Coleman was m,t..
caught for four hits, two of thos9
being in the ninth by pinch hitters.
Kane was rapped for 10 safa ones
and all of them came, at opportune
times. Over 100 fans saw the. game;
In the seventh inning West came
to the bat and hit a hot one. through
Kane. It passed by second, and lost
itself in tenter field. Cowan played
hide and seek trying to find it and
West trotted home. Finally a small
boy came over and picked it off the
cross beam of the fence for Cowan,
In . the eighth inning Coleman bunted
a little easy one to Engle, who,
thinking Coleman would not go to
first held it for a fll minute and
then threw to third, after Rock had
landed safe on the bag. "Spec" went
on to first, and in a frantic effort to
catch him there Jansen over threw
Fuller about six feet, letting Rock;
score.
Running in three pinch hitters In
the ninth Engle tried in vain to start
a batting rally, although two scores
were chalked in that inning. -

Men of La Grande
It is said that both Walla Walla
and La Grande wanted Peet who se
cured his release from Baker and
signed with Pendleton. That's right.
Peet is worth having on any club.

As an example of unquenchable
hope in the face of extreme adversity,
the rising of the Baker grandstand
to its feet in the seventh inning of
Sunday's game when the score was
21 to 7 against their team is with
out a peer, comments the East Ore
gonian. f
Walla Walla is raising the howl
that the umpire's decisions helped
Boise win the last three games of
the series. Of course we know it is
absurb to even whisper such a thing
but nevertheless, did any umps ever
help Walla Walla win the first three
games of any season at home?
Perish the thought.
Burnside went through the first
game with good success. He called
the corners for everybody and every
body was satisfied, making, of course
errors at times which every mortal
will. He is back of the catcher when
allowable which helps the proposi
tion on cornere.
Paddy Welsh, a pitcher that will
strengthen Walla Walla greatly, ar
rived last night to join the Bears.
Gorcrnment Plate Factory Next.
Washington, May 21. A govern
ment factory to manufacture armour
plate for American warships is urged
by Secretary of the Navy Daniels. He
asserts the present manufacturers
are in combination to keep up priecs,
and believes the government plant
which would not compete with pri
vate factories, is the logical solution.
Here's good news for every man
