Notorious Criminal on Trial.
Pekin, 111., May 21. Notorious as
a man who made a sensational escape
from the government penitentiary at
Fort Leavenworth by crawling a half
mile through an 18-inch sewer pipe,
Clyde Stratton, a safe ijobber? was
taken to Rock Island today to answer
to an- indictment for murder. He .is
charged with killing Cashier Crowder
while robbing the Silvas, Ills., Na
tional bank last December. '

paralleled in legal annals, a burglary
case is being tried in Judge Ronald's
department of the superior court to
day with a voman as attorney for
the state, ami another as attorney
for the defendant, Arthur Swanson
MiBs Reah Whitehead, the deputy
prosecuting attorney is the state's
counsel and Mis? Lola May Blinn is
counsel for the defense. Two women
are also on the jury. In case of a
conviction Swanson faces a peniten
tiary sentence.
