KuxMell preached
iu i tbe Opera
Home tbls after
noon. Ills text
was: "The Mor
rows of d e a t b
compassed me.
and tbe piilnn of
bell gat bold npon
me." Psalm
110:3.
The Pastor dec-lured
tbut bis
text, like many other Bible statements.
Is so grievously misunderstood as to
prevent Christian progress. Many no
ble bearta. be claimed, are famishing
for lack of refreshment of Ood's Truth.
Tbe channels of thought are blocked
by fossilized errors of tbe Dark Ages.
Tbe ports of our hearts should be deep
ened and widened by the blowing up
of tbe false and devilish hell doctrines'.
which binder ua from receiving spirit
ual nourishment . There exists "a fam
ine for beating the Word of God."
If tbls text were tbe only one mis-
tranKlnted and misunderstood, be said,
the ordinary reader would doubtless
pass It by as a figure of speech. But
It la merely one of a combination of
mistranslation, all of which are con
nected with an eternal torment sys
tem of doctrines Invented during the
Dark Ages. This power of error Is
turning Intelligent minds away from
the Bible. Hence It la our duty to
brenk down these false doctrines, 'and
to Hear away whatever hinders tbe
flow of Truth to God's people.
The Psalmist is merely telling of bis
severe Illness, from wblcb bv tbe gnrcqrl
of (iod he recovered. He would have
It understood tbat It whs not merely a
slight ailment. neiice be described It
as "the sorrows of death" tbat Is. the
sadness associated with the thought
that he was shout to die. about to
leave his friends. . In poetic nebrew.
ne repeat tbe thought In the next
statement-"the pain of hell gat bold
upon me." They were the pains of ap
proaching dissolution. There Is not
the slightest reference to the future.
Why Not the Whole Truth.
In their revised translation of tbe
Bible, our Baptist friends use tbe ex
pression, "the underworld." Instead of
bell. Yet even here Is danger that tbe
average render muy not catch the true
thought. Kar simpler and wiser it
would tie bad tbe translator said, "tbe
pains of the toinh."
Every learned minister knows tbat
the Redrew word Sbeol really means
the grave, tbe pit. tbe state of death.
Why do they hesitate to teil tbe people,?
Why do they translate It sometimes
Ihr urure. and other times the under
trnrlilt Why do they use the trausla
tloii. the grare. In one place, the pit its
another, and then reuw to translate It
n a third place, giving Instead tbe
'.ctnal word Sbeol? Was It their In
tention to confuse the people? What
is the motive? We wlsb that some of
these great men would explain.
The Reason For All This.
We would like to have our minis
terial liretbren state their reasous for
hiding the truth on tbe subject of bell
Only because they decline to do so. do
ve feel at liberty to make suggestions.
These ministers seem to ne of two
elnsses. with slightly different reasons
for Niiem-e on tins suojeet. 'I bey seem
to ngree tbnt It Is dangerous to tell tbe
lieople that ;kI Is really a God of love,
mill thHt the doctrine of eternal tor
ment Is iinsrrlptiirnl. promulgated dur
ing the lark Ages hy men who burn
si one another at tbe stake.
The. Pastor declared that one class
of ministers seem to fear that If peo
ple saw the errors of the creeds, they
would discredit tbe ministers who had
tnught these dvtrlnes But why fear
to tell the truth) Perhaps they fear
th.it lieople will lne confidence In their
teaching, and that the party walls of
Christendom, whleb bnve so long di
vided (.iid's people, will full. Klncethcy
will pot tell us. we ran only surmise.
Other ministers, he said, have become
higher critics, and do not believe the
Bible They prefer to pose as beller-
p. n'l hope for the time wheo all the
