Victim May Lose Both Eyes.
Baker. March 27. (Special.) Ac
cording' to the attending physician
Sunday, H seemed likely that John
Carroll, the victim of Pinney Currey,
who shot him with a load of No. 4
shot Tuesday night, would lose the
sight of both eyes. The right optic,
the only one remaining, seemed to be
losing its power and Carroll could
see but very little and late In the
day was almost blind. Yesterday,
however, he could distinguish the
light when the bandage was removed
and- possibly It will be saved. It
seems that the charge of shot
through the glass door must have
carried some particles of glass rath
er than shot Into the eye, and every
effort Is being made to ascertain the
cause of the trouble.

and the only story of the affair that
he has told was to her. He said he
thought the Currey store was a sa
loon and that by going In tbo back
way, even though it was after hours,
he could find a friend whom be
thought was sleeping in a back room.
He says he did not cut the screen

Forger Caught Last1 Evening.

A man giving the name of Claude
Fets was arrested last evening by
Officers Brennan and Nelson after
several unsuccessful ( attempts to
pass worthless checks at different
saloons. His game was suspected
and the officers all but caught him In
the act. 'When arrested and thrown
Into the city Jail, be admitted that
the checks were forgeries.
Aa far as could be learned be did
not succeed In cashing any. The
checks were drawn In favor of him
self and the forger made use of First
National Bank checks. The captured
penman is a stranger and would give
no account of himself.

White Slaver Bemoans Fate.

Alfonso Lagana, the Italian who
was arrested Saturday night on a
charge of white slavery and lodged
In the county Jail, following efforts
to commit suicide in tbe city Jail, con
tinues hie disturbances nightly and
since 'bis arrest has slept but a few '
hours, when he became exhausted f
yesterday afternoon and took a short,
nap.
He has not tried to beat his brains
out as be did at first but keeps up a
constant moaning an3' crying so that !
his fellow prisoners and Jail officials
as well know little peace. If he can
not be Induced to cease his no'sy
lamentations other quarters will be
found for him.
His case is now being considered
by the grand Jury which is expected
to report tomorrow. Heretofore lo

ed over to the federal court but it is
the intention of District Attorney

terday afternoon that State Superin
tendent of Schools L. R. Alderman
had accepted the position as super
intendent of the Portland city schools
means almost certainly the appoint
ment of iProf. J. A. Churchill of this
city as Mr. Alderman's successor, ac
cording to the opinion of those close
In touch wl:h the situation, because
the attitude of Governor West Is
known to be strongly in favor of the
Baker man as the next- head of the
state educational Institution. While
the appointment has not yet been an
nounced, according to those In close
touch there Is little or no doubt bin
that the acceptance of Mr. Alderman
of the Portland position means fflr.
