Partly because the contributor
donates a carlod of potatoes, and
partly because the name is short,
snappy, suggestive of local enter
prises, the term "Spuds" has been
advanced and accepted as the handle
of the La Grande baseball club, In
stead of "Pippins." Last year It was
an apple that the club packed around
who u, ana now it is to De a spuu.
President Foley fell for the name like
a dying man to a straw.
A dozen or more contributors pre
ferred "Payrollers." The name Is a
trifle long for convenience. Others
wanted "The Nuggets,- the "Hikers"
and various other names all suitable.
Mr. Foley however likes the name
Spuds."
George' L. Cleaver, of Imbler is the
presentor of tbla unusual name for a
baseball club. "In view of the fact
that the team is managed by an Irish
man and that there are about seven
train loads sent out from this valley
annually, the name "Spuds" Is to my
opinion appropriate." Mr. Cleaver
donates a carload of the famous Im
bler spuds to the "sinking fund" of
the team.
Player Manager Carl King is in
Boise today looking over the field at
the south end of 'the Western Tri
state league territory. 'The actual
purpose' of his business there Is to
look over the Cohen Indians and if
possible to get a line on the material
so that when Cohen commences to
let go, La Grande will be in . readi
ness to grab some ot the choice
morsels which Boise now believes
she has , gobbled up exclusively.
While there he will notice how Karl
Walters the nifty first baseman Is
com tag along and pave the, way for
hooking fclm if Spokane is to let him
drop.
Boise, March 22. (Special) Babe
Reams will report for play with the
Boise team this season. Gliulin an
nounced yesterday that be. had come
to terms with the crack Boise short
stop, and he will be on hand on April
1 when the rest of the Irrigators re
port.
Q'mlin Is studying the . talent
brought here by Joe Cohn and devot
ing particular attention to his young
sters. There are so many of them that
he has not closely watched them all.
but before Sunday the old fox will
have a good Idea what every Individ
ual Indan recruit can do and will be
ready to talk deals with Colin.
The Boise manager Is somewhat
stuck on some of the youngsters, but
he is keeping quiet and wa'tlng to
see them develop. So far he has not
been able to get a line on the p'tch
Ing department.- The weather has not
been such as to permit the heavers to
let themselves out and Cohn himself
does not know for sure how they will
shape up. Dad many get a couple of
the Snokane box men, but It is im
possible to forecast at this time which
ones may. be turned over to Boise.
In the infield and in the far garden
Cohn has as nice a looking bunch of
youngsters as a manager' could wish
to look at, and If GImlln and Cohn
ran come to terms some of them may
be wearing Boise, uniforms this year.
GImlln will see' what he is go'ng to
need, however, before securing any of
them.
No club in the circuit Is better fixed
for the beginning of the season than
: Pendleton. The Bucks have eight
men signed who are known to be
there with the quality, and McKune
has enough others In sight to make It
apparent tnat '-lie Buck aggregation
Is apt to get away In the lead in the
rce for the flag.

will become so severe that the open
ing shoot In the state bluerock league

Grande is pitted against Portland as
a starter, and for this reason the
local club will be handicapped by bad
weathe rhere while Portland Is not
bothered with It. However, , barring
blizzards and blinding snowstorms,
the local shots aim to commence the
shooting promptly at 2 o'clock tomor
row afternoon and every person that
can, or thinks he can, kill blue rocks
Is -most urgently urged to be pres
ent The five highest scores are the
ones that will go In to Portland and
compete with the five highest there."
Baker's Trap Men Not steady.
Baker, March 22. (Special) Ac
cording to the' schedule received yes
terday by Secretary O'Gorman of he
Baker Rod and Gun club, the 8tate
League Gun clubs match is scheduled
to begin Easter Sunday with Baker
as the opponent of the Bend club in
the opening' number of the telegraph
ic match. The schedule was made
without consulting Baker and. evi
dently those vbo framed it up did
not take the present weather condi
tions into consideration.
According to members of the club,
it will be impossible for Baker to
start the shoot on next Sunday, but
all are anxious to, take part in the
telegraphic tournament, which will
show who's who and why in shooting
circles in the whole state.

these two boys that, in a letter to lo
cal club officers he declares George
Pembrooke would have a hard time
displacing either.

team last year, has again taken a con
tract. "Dim ,Rader. third baseman last
year. Is a holdout, but it is possible
that he may come to terms yet. There
Is also a possibility that Ray Augus
tus will again cavort in the shorts'op
position. An Infield composed of Lo
deli, McKune, Augustus and Rader
would be as fast a comblntlon as the
heart of fan could wish.
