' Snugly content on the bosom of hla
prlaoner-motlier Implicated in white
slavery and worse than beast prac
tices, a nine-weeks' old babe la in
the city jail today by force of cir
cumstance. It is not the babe that
the officers of the- law. seek and the
officers this time are arms of the fed
eral government, but the mother and
aad the child's father that are en
tangled In the meshes of law minions
that hie their victims penitentiary-
ward. If half of what has been con-
Jessed to and what the officers claim
as evidence. Is true, the .man, woman
and babe form the basis of the most
pitiful, nauseating, contemptible,
beast-nature, milk of human kindness
conglomeration that has ever blotted
the annals of local police history. '
Two confessions have been elicited
from the man who has spent several
months here and the police have
nroof that the couple came here from
Kelso, Washington, landing first' at
Pendleton and then coming on to
La Grande. This puts the matter un
der the white slave code and Port
land, federal officers have been noti
fied of the arrests and the conditions
leading up to them, by virtue of Im
porting from one state to another.
From what can be learned, and of
what the man told Officers Avant and
Walden the fellow picked up this
mere slip of a girl, pretty, keen of
eye and trim of figure, in Portand
about a year ago. They went to Kel
so, the story goes, and in less than
a week were foul of the law for al
leged immoral practices. They came
on to Pendleton and there made their
home for some time, but police here
are advised that they moved 'to La
(Grande after the man had been fined
everely for immoral practices. Af-
jter coming here, he obtained em
ployment ror a wnue, ana eventual i

Swede Explodes Game
This went on for some time until
Thursday night, a Swede laborer of
his city, exploded the alleged w'- ie
Haver.
This particular man was, !i, says.
ntloed to a certain room in almost
beart of the city, by the man In
uestlon who gives his nam.; as Saun
ers. and there met the woman.
Shortly afterwards, the ,- laborer

a fake.- He also found the babe in
the rooms. Leaving the mother and
child, he. took Saunders to jail and
on the way ' he confessed that the
girl was not bis wife, and ater reiter
ated the same story to Officer Wa'.den,
Proof that the couple crossed the
state line, and the story of'the labor
er make a damaging chain of evi
dence, clearly putting the .man in taa ,
white slave trade and furthermore
adds the crime of soliciting for im
moral purposes. Yesterday the offi
cials found It necessary to bring tbe
woman Into jail and they are there
today.
Girl Remarkable One.
Despite all. the girl hugs and kisses
the man who claims fatherhood to
the babe, and cries .out for mercy.
"Put me in the penitentiary but let
him go" is her appeal In the face of
circumstances too-horrible to permit
publication. She was his slave almost
intermittently through the winter and
immediately again after the crime
born baby came. Earmarks of hered
itary' diseases are plainly visible on
tbe face' of the little one which, still J
an ini&ni, snows noi wnere it is, nor
wbat Its' past. Hearts hardened by
constant touch with crime and crlmi
nas, B'eed with sorrow at the sight of
the pitiful scene that tbe Jail cells
hold.
Word from-' Portland relative to the
disposal, of the case is expected to
night or tomorrow.
In sharp contrast to the love, af
fection and . fidelity to her common
law husband is the spoken desire of
the man to leave the woman and get
away from the city if the police would
but allow it "She will stay with the
brute, for such he manifestly is if

true, until the last, and today when
she was led away to breakfast her
pretty face, undermined with fear and
worry, carries the earmarks of the
life she has led. She claims to be
82 year of age. i
