' MARKET.
This year when potatoes are bring
ing next to nothing on the market. It
1a very Intereitting to know how L. B.
Carter, one of the progress! young
ranchers near Core, managed to get
60 cents a bag for his potatoes. He
had over a thousand bags and saw
there was no money In sight for the
crop. With his usual business sagacity
lie began to figure bow much fat
be could put on bogs with those po
tatoes and arranged a cooking plant
He has . been cook lux potatoes and
mixing them wtth shorts and as a re
sult he has netted a little over sixty
cents a bag for his potatoes. AO

quently a way to make a market
when the law of supply and demand
goes against the producer.

sey, formerly of La Grande but now
of McMlnnville, is to be chosen to
the supreme bench in Oregon causes
considerable satisfaction among the
Judge's trends' In this part of the
state. It is conceded by all that he
will make 'a splendid man for the
place and the fact that he ha lived
In Eastern Oregon as well as the
Willamette valley gives him a person
al knowledge of the state that is
worth while. To those who have
never lived in tbt part of the state
local conditions here are unknown
and they cannot be gained from news
papers or books. But Judge aAmsey
is equipped with this information a'
first hand. His ascendancy to the
bench s looked upon by all as a Just
recogntion of ability.

Washington where he has connected

ber company. 'Mr. Baasett is very
popular In La Grande and bis many
friends will regret to know that he i
