General Market (Review la Portland
Yesterday Morning.
, Portland, Feb. 21. (Special) The
apple market 1 sagging again. Prices
are fully 25c lower than a week ago
the movement 1 not so good. While
there is a scarcity of fancy sizes,
those running four tier or more, so
much '4V4 and 5 tier fruit is being of
fered that prices have been forced
downward. ;
"Extra fancy four tier Spltzenbergs
from Hood River are quoted at 11.50
a box along Front street today, this
beta the extreme limit of the mar
ket at this time. A week ago simi
lar stock iu being readily picked
up at 11.75.
Apples that range from 4V4 tier
downward are telling at the lowesst I
prices for many years. Extra fancy !
Hood Rlvef Spltzenbergs are freely'
offered by the wholesale trade at J
(1.16 a box with B tier of similar
quality down to $1.00 and even low
er. The trend of the apple trade at this
time seems to Indicate that Pacific
northwest growers will be compelled
to widen their. market territory.
The apple acreage Is now so great
here that the former trade limits are .
too small and more foreign shlpr
ments will be necessary in the future
to clear up. , '
