"If wlshene were horses beggars
would ride" is an . old saying tliat
wight find gome application to the
fruit business. If apples wore lilcli
and cost of transportation less the
farmers and fruit growers of the val
ley would have more money than they
would know what to tlo with. As It
Is the wishes are not having any de
cided effect on the market and the
best that can he said of the whole ap
llc business Is that the wholesalers
and the retailers In the eastern mark
ets seem to have the crop so well cor
nered Hint the farmer will get but
' meagre returns for his labor and
trouble.
The La Grande Fruit Growers' As
soclatlon is shipping two or three ear
loads a day to markets scattered
over all parts of the fluted States
Some of the last shipments have gone
to New York and are realizing about
$1.15 per box. When 60 cents comes
off that sum there is little left to crow
about. In maty Instances apples are
not paying the exponses of transport
ation. In one Instance a shipper of
this section had to pay the railroad
company In the neighborhood of $75
freight. Another man had a return
on his shipment of two cents.
Some Grande Ronde valley apples
sold at a public auction at Boston the
other day for 77 and 95 cents per box.
Nor wore these apples of common
grade. Only extra fancy and fancy
were doled out to the purchaser but
the price could not be lifted above the
figures given above. The charges
on these apples amounts to 60 cents
per box f. o. b. La Grande which of
coarse does not Include the .cost of
picking and packing and handling be
fore they are put on the cars.
One of the apple men of the city
says the farmers of the valley should
specialize In product tht will make
a irame for Itself throughout the
world and then stick to that variety.
The la Grande fruit growers asso
ciation have some 40,000 boxes of
choice apples on band and are realiz
ing a fair profit from the same. In
view of the market conditions through
out the world there is no likelihood
that Ihe apples are going to make any
one independently wealthy this year.

The Andromeda Nebula."
One of toe most astonishing objects
n the heavens In the great nebula In
the constellation Andromeda, which Is
visible a a misty Mpeck to the naked

because, while IN structure a Herles

that of the mm It has been suggested

8om Quaint Hotels.
The hotel that stands but the most

Many people who really want electric lights,
but who are unfamiliar with the progress in
electric lighting within the past few rears, still
hold to this belief.
If you are one of these, you will be agreeably
surprised to loarn that electric lights are now
within the means of every family in La flrande.
We arc prepared to demonstrate to the most
skeptical, that they are the most economical
light to use.
