The secretary of agriculture an
nounces that Investigations conduct
ed In 1907 and 1910 to determine the
conditions on an area of more than
1.000,000 acres In northeastern Ore
gon showed that the killing of a large
number of trees by the mountain pine
beetle had been going on in this area
since 1905. It was estimated that 35
per cent of the lodgepole pine on
about 1.000,000 acres and 50 per cent
of the matured lodgepole on 800,000
acres of the same area had been killed
or a to'.al of over 800,000 trees. It
was also estimated that 110,000 yellow
pine had been killed by this beetle
and that the1 Invasion was moving
south and southeast Into more valua
ble areas of yellow pine.
In order to demonstrate the prac
ticability of the control measures
recommended by the expert on For
est Insects of the bureau of Ento
mology, an area of about 90.000 acres
principally In the yellow pine was
selected In which to conduct a beetle
control project.
In the spring and summer of 1A12
a thorough Inspection was made of
the treatod area. It was found that
on the 87,950 acres of the treated
area the number of trees killed by
the Insects bad decreased 32,480, more
than 80 per cent while or some un
treated check area the Increase was
240 per cent,

A good bit of advice concerning the
selling of wool on the sheets' back
is given out by the Secretary of the
Woolgrowers' association, John G
Moke of Medical Springs. The fol
lowing Is taken from the Baker Democrat:
"Sheepmen and wool growers of
this section of the country should not
be anxious to contract their crops
early this year," said John G. Hoke
of Medical Springs, secretary of the
Oregon Wool- Growers' assoclatln,
last ' evening to a representative of
the Democrat. "This Idea of con
tracting thn wool on the sheeps'
backs at this time is not to the best
interest of the growers and they
should wait a while. I am In con
stant receipt of communications
from buyers and those In close touih
with the wool situation at the wooi
centers and am certain that prices a
little later will be good and that
those who hold off for a time will
better themselves greaty. The buy
ers will be after mutton fed stock,
and the prices will be good; of this
I am certain.
"The outlook is very good new
and the growers have every season
to feel optimistic and they will fe?l
much better satisfied with a good
price later on than sacrificing tao

With an abundance of enthusiasm
and a substantial membership, the
'Round-up" gun club of Pendleton
was organized at the city hall last
evening. Officers were elected, com
mittees appolntod and the organiza
tion made permanent. Just as soon
as the committee on grounds and
equipment can select a place and get
it fitted up the shooting will start.
Last night's meeting was called to
order by G. I. La Dow and W. E.
Crock was named as temporary
chairman. Three committees were
immediately appointed, one on consti
tution and by-laws, composbd of E. F.
Averlll, W. L. Thompson and Lee D.
Drake; one on nominations, consist
ing of G. I. La Dow, R. F. Kirkpatrlck
and William Hale; and one on
grounds and equipment, consisting of
William Hoch, Gene Blanchett and
Dan Bowman.
After a brief recess a constitution
and by-laws were adopted as recom
mended by the committee. The chief
features of these are the name, of the
club, the placing of the dues at $2 a
year and forbidding gambling in any
form on the grounds.
The committee on nominations re
ported ths following: J. P, Winter,
president; J. J. Hamley, vice presi
dent; Dr. J. E. Sharp secretary and W
L. Thompson treasurer. Mr. Thomp
son said he would be unable to serve
and William Hale's name was sub
stituted. With this change the re
port was adopted and the nominees of
the committee were made the elected
officers of the club for the ensuing;
' year.
