Owners of the thousands of sacks
of potatoes remaining unsold la Union
county will be anything but grieved
at the news from Portland and Call
fornla relative to the stiff demand for
potatoes. A Portland news item says
In connection with the potato market:
"California Is demanding Oregon po
i a toes In such quantities that a seri
ous shortage of refrigerator, cars la
threatened.
"Although the price la not particu
larly flattering to the growers, the
potato movement now le heavier and
steadier than It haa been at any time
since the crop waa harvested. ,
' The territory tributary to the Ml
Hood line of the Portland Railway
Light and Power company, has been
growing a lot of potatoes In the last
few years and most of those produced
last year have not been marketed
California buyers recently secured the
bulk of those that were left and the
farmers now are seeking to move
them, but it is hard to get refrigera
tors cars. '
Cars havo been In demand the last
few weeks on the O.-W. R. & N. main
line on account of the heavy move
ment of fruit from Hood 'River and
other apple-growing districts to New
York and other eastern points.
An effort is now being made to
provide the points that are in need
of cars with a sufficient number to
supply Immediate demands."

TIME WAS
When There Was An Excuse For
using kerosene lamps. People thought, and
lightly too, that electric lights were beyond the
means of the family of modest inrome.
Many people who realty want electric: lights,
hut who are unfamiliar with the progress in
electric lighting within the past few years, still
hold to this belief.
If j-ou are one of these, you will he agreeably
surprised to learn that electric lights are now
within the means of every family in La Grande.
We are prepared to demonstrate to the most
skeptical, that they are the most economical
light to use.
