Suminerville People Hare Dispute

Wn, Buchanan of Summeryllle has
been charged with the crime of as
sault with a dangerous weapon. The
preliminary hearing wa held yes
terday and the defendant waived ex
amination and was bound over to the
grand Jury. '. According to hi state
ment he had work for a Mr.' Smith
of that place and had due him a sum
of money. Meeting the mother ano
the son on the road one day he ask
ed them for --the money and was re
fused. An altercation ensued In
which both parties are said to have
passed rough words to one another
and threatened to mak things lnter-
terestlng. The young man who was
mounted got off his horBe and ap
proached his opponent. This latter
bncked away, but Smith took off hla
coat and threw it over the head of
Buchanatf, endeavoring thereby to
put the latter at a disadvantage, it
is said. Buchanan threw the coat off
and Smith repeated the operation. On
removing the coat the second time
he was considerably' startled to see
pointed toward him a revolver, which
Buchanan held In his hard pointed
towards Smith.' This is said to be
the cause of the charge. Several lo
cal men went on the $100 bond of
the defendant and he will be at II In
erty until the grand Jury and the
court have disposed of the case.

Los Angeles, Jan. 21. Impaneling
a Jury' for the second trial of Clar
ence Darrow Is going to be beset with
more difficulty than 'the first. The
men called on to do Jury work are
making all kinds of excuses.
Some have asked to be excused on
the ground of being' on the point of
making a world tour, others are com
pelled to "work on the ranch to warl
off bankruptcy on acocunt of the dam
age to oranges and lemons by the
recent frost. '
