THE SPEAKER RISK KILL.
In considering the vetoed bill this
legislature seems Inclined to, some
time during the session, look favonu
bly upon and probably pass the Speak
er Rusk bill of last session which
provides (or a second . choice by the
voters. The bill always seemed to
us a good one, and In the Interest of
fairness we never could understand
why Governor West vetoed the meas
ure unless It was to protect some po
litical game that he bad on with oth
er officials. It certainly looked as
though that was the only reason.
The senate this session bas already
gone behind the Rusk bill and will
fight for It throughout the session,
while the house la fuddling with it
back and forth. .But there is a possi
bility of It passing both houses and be
coming a law which would mean that
a lot of foolishness bas , been ; done
away with In elections in Oregon.
The, Rusk bill is well known to every
reader quite likely and needs no
planatlon. It means that the voter
ball have a second choice on election
as well as a first choice. Other states
that have this law working say It Is a
good thing and it stands to reason
that It would be.

GO TO) 'E3I, LAIR.
Our confidence in Senator Lair
Thompson, of Lakevlew, Is crowing
It always was good sufficient, but Lair
Thompson is showing speed In legis
lative matters. Ho Is showing that
the organization does not dominate
blm, neither d oes( the "mighty" gov
ernor. When this session will have
finished the name of Lair Thompson
will have been connected with almost
every fight for good legislation that
occurs in the legislature and he will
bave been a stumbling block to many
f the corporations whose "pussy-footing"
lobbyists are always watchful
for tbo interests of their masters. I
Go to 'em, Lair, you are from the
cow country where you don't have to
bow the bead or bend the knee to any
man who offices in a story building, or ,
owns a string or mines, or naa
stock In a wholesale house.

Editor Observer Dear Sir I would
like to say a few words about' this'
compulsory vaccination scare. Now
I believe that this remedy is ten times
worse than tbe disease and to my
knowledge bas utterly undermined
the health of . many children. Just
think of having oiir loved o'nes Inocu
lated with a lot of filthy viruB. The
wlole scheme Is illegal and would de
prive us of the liberty granted us by
the constitution of the United States,
to care for and protect our children
from all danger and sickness without
Interference from anyone.
The whole proceeding is uncalled
for and Is not Justified by any - epi
demic existing In La Grande at the
present time.
