any Eastern Oregon town and vice
versa Is the object of a move that is
now being launched and has some
very enthusiastic b.ickero.
Dan P. Smythe, a Pendleton law
yer and sheepman who has been en
listed In the plan, discussed It yes
lerday for publication as follows:
"The Barlow road was bult In
early days and Is yet a toll road. It
extends through the mountains and
is In very good condition as far as
Mt. Hood. The eastern end of the
road, however, has been neglected
for years. Some Portland people o

Thompson, Walter Burrell, H. Wem
me and other members of the Port
land auto club desire to see tlio toll
road purchased and a public highway
provided at once to Eastern OreRon.

The plan Is to have the Portland
people take care of the road through
the Cascade and to the Wasco county
line. Then for each county in East
ern Oregon to look after that portion1
of the road within Its boundaries. It
will not be necessary to establish any
new roads or to do any expensive
work anywhere. Malcolm Moody says
that the road through Wasco county
can be maintained ery easily and
the the work will be done. The route
to Pendleton will be via Olex, Hepp
ner and Pilot Rock. By taking this
course the sand will be avoided and
a hard highway may be used. From
Pendleton to La Grande the road now
In use may be utlllxed and It will only
be necessary to see that it is kept Id
shape. The same will be true of the
road over from Heppner. Through
very little expense on the part of the
county courts or through use ot mon-
: ey raised by subscription the roads

travel during the fair weather season.
Boon to Roundup.
"Portland people want to see this
road arranged for this sumnior if
possible so that this fall they can
make the run to Pendleton by auto
and attend the Roundup. . Last fall
a number of Portlanders came by au

to The Dalles. But they had mucb
trouble coming over sandy roads and
It is desired to get a highway farther
back from the river. The Portland

According to Mr. Smythe! he will
lay the highway plan before the lo-
! cal auto clubs shortly In hopes that
some action may be taken towards
assuring the promoters of the plans
that Eastern Oregon people will do
their part In the event the scheme is
taken up.

SUN WINS NEWSPAPER CONTEST
j Wallowa Sun and Enterprise Chief-
tain Battle for Subscriber.
The end of a heavy contest between
the Wallowa Sun and the Enterprise
Chieftain camp yesterday when the
county court of Wallowa county In
awarding the county printing gave it
to the Soun on the ground ETAOI
to the Sun on the legal ground that
its circulation was the larger. The
state law provides that official pa
pers shall be named by the court ac
cording to the circulation. On this
ground the two Wallowa county pa
pers have boon having a red hot cir
culation contest. The city of Wallowa
held a celebration last evening ovt,r
the success of their newspaper and
Editor Marsh was made the center
piece during congratulations.

The visitor Is an unknown quantity,
but that ho Is shifty and heavy are
two facts well established. He Is
considerably heavier than Warner
the popular La Grander, and the local
