ER OUR ASSORTMENT BEFORE BUYING
Regardless of what, the wool tariff
may end up with, there will be plen
ty of good mutton on the markets
next year. The splendid range grass
over all Eastern Oregon ranges this
year has prepared flocks for a se
vere winter if such should result, and
to all appearances 'Eastern Oregon
consumers of mutton will not hav'i
to pay very high prices for their
favorite meat dish. This, too. Is en
couraging In view of the fact that
mutton has In the last year or so
become a much more popular food
: stuff than It has usually been. Speak
ing of the sheep conditions, the fol
' lowing is quoted from Pendleton:
i 'My foreman at Arlington tells me
that the grass on the range Is now
better than he has seen at this time
'of the vear for 15 years." says Dan
P. Smythe, extensive "woolgrower,and
for many years secretary of the state
association. "The rood condition Is
due mainly to the fact of the good
rains last spring. The sheep did well
on the summer ranges because of
,mucb grass and moisture. Then when
the ycame down to the winter range
the fouad much rood dry grass to
eat That feed kept the sheep going
well until the green grass was ready.
They are now in splendid shape and
should go through the winter well.
The Indications now re that the wool
next spring will ibe heavy and of
good quality. The quality and quan
tity of wool born b ya sheej depends
very largely on the physical condl
tion of the sheep. If the sheep gets
into bad shape the wool clip is light
and the wool of poor grade."
