One of the thrilling scenes from the great play, 'The Third Degree," at
the Steward tonight.
When Charles Klein wrote 'The
Third Degree", which will be pre
sented at the Steward tonight, he
proved himself a better prophet than
he himself believes. For, by reason
of the recent police scandal which
has arisen In New York and stirred
the entire country Mr. Klein's great
drama appears In an entirely new
light Throughout the entire action
there is an undercurrent of sugges
tion of blackmail methods used by
the police or New York City. When
the piece was produced, it is doubt
ful it this attracted much attention.
It was probably acceped as necess
ary only to the development of the
plot and was taken as the vagaries of
the playwright.
Since the revelations of the Dis
trict Attorney Whitman, however,
they present a much different ap
pearance. The Idea which Mr. Klein
is thus attempting to impress upon
his audiences reaches Its climax In
the third act when IRlchard Brews-
ter attorney for Howard Jeffries, Jr.
accused of murder and forced into
making a confession through the us6
of "third degree" methods, tells Capt.
Clinton, the police officer who ob
talned the confession, "Yes. and the
papers will be interested In knowing
that you have become a mtllioniare
on a salary of $3000 a year."
This prophecy of the case of Lieut.
Charles Becker is so startling that
Is with difficulty that one remembers
that Mr. Klein wrote hts play before
the New York tragedy.
The company which the United
Play company has selected for the
Interpretation of "The Third Degree"
is considerably above the average.
Miss Gertrude Ritchie who takes the
part of Annie, has a voice that is
peculiarly adapted for the part she
interprets, and her many mannerisms
lend reality to the character. Miss
Ritchie is ably assisted by Orrln T.
Burke, In the role of Richard Brewster

We also believe that each of the
two convict labor bills, providing for
working all convicts upon public
highways should become a law.
The Medford Home Rule County
Bonding act Is crudely drawn and
places no protection around' the ex
penditure of the money, neither does
it give the peoplo any Initiative pow
er toward naming the roads to be Im
proved, and it offers no protection
either to Its citizens or the purchas
er of the bonds. In leaving its power
to Issue more bonds entirely unlim
ited.
We believe that the necessity of
making a start, and the danger of so
many road measures defeating the
whole proposition for getting better
roads for Oregon, that considering
all conditions as we see them It Is
wise to give our undivided support to
the two Grange Roads bills No. 324
and No. 326, and the two Convict
Labor bills No. 338 and 338 and vote
"NO" upon each of the other three
road bills and the two constitution
al amendments pertaining to road
building.

No. 341 Harmony Committee bill,
providing for a state highway board
and one million state bond Issue an
nually. No. 343 Harmony Commtttee Con
stitutional Amendment providing for
limitation of state bonds.

road to be Improved.
