SADDLE MAKING IN MEXICO.

Tbe making of saddles, while In tbe
aggregate an Important local Mexican
Industry, is purely a home affair, the
artisans for tbe most part working In
dependently in their own homos and
often pressing the entire family into
service. Tbe manager of the largest
wholesale and retail dealers In saddles
l& Mexico City says that all the saddles
which they handle are made locally at
home by band, and be estimates that
more than 100 families in tbe city are
similarly employed.
Many of these handmade saddles are
handsomely carved and most creditable
la appearance, although the leather as
role Is far Inferior to tbat used In
American saddles. It la tbe practice of
retailers to furnish the trees, leather
and fittings of all kinds to the work
men and pay them for their actual la
bor. Tbe labor la the cheapest Item
