LISTEN TO THIS
The New York Herald, which apparently long ago
made a vow never to print the name of Theodore
, Roosevelt in its columns, and which always refers
to him as"'The Third Termer" has been making elab
orate preparations to print a poll it took of the dif
ferent states. It announced often, in a. loud voice,
that this poll would appear on Sunday, October 6th.
From day to day the Herald would announce that
Taft was gaining; that there was a great movement
to Taft; that the Progressive cause was waning; that
the Democratic cause was gaining, etc., so that we
looked for this poll on Sunday morning, October 6th,
with fear and trembling; and, lo and behold! we find
that it concedes almost the entire Western country to
i Roosevelt; that it absolutely concedes Illinois by
an overwhelming vote; that it gives us such states as
Connecticut; that it makes Roosevelt well up to Wil
son in New York;' that it would have given him the
City of New York if it had not put in an overwhelm
ing vote in favor of Taft, taken among the brokers of
the New York Stock Exchange. Then it proceeds to
total up the different States and brings Taft in a bad ,
second or third in all but one State.
That is the way Taft is gaining.
It is to laugh! ,
