steud of being elected their servants,
they established themselves as a cleri

tne hOIISChokl of faith, themselves ap
pointing the ministers over the congre

by election, as In the days of the
Apostles. .

of the clergy, having the title of
bishops, were claimed to be, the sue-
ceg80r8'of tne Ap08ties, with the same
right to teach and to be considered In
fallible messengers or Christ, me
doctrine of Apostolic Succession was
formulated. They pointed out that
when Judas lost his place amongst
The Twelve, the eleven met and chose
one to fill his plnre.

Jesus assured these 'JTwelve that they
should "sit on twelve thrones, Judg
ing the twelve trllies of Israel," In the
"Times of Restitution" and "Regenera
tion." (Matthew xlx. 28; Acts III, 19
21.) These Twelve were araln pictured
symbolically la Revelation as the
crown of twelve stnrs. on the head of
the svmliollenl Woman, who represent
ed the Church of Christ. . Again The
Twelve are pictured In the symbolic
New Jerusalem. - which portrays the
Church beyond the veil In Heavenly
glory, as twelve foundation stones.
Revelation x.l. U.
False or Pteudo-Apostlot.
Of these Twelve alone Jesus said,
"Whatsoever things ye bind on earth
shall be bound in Heaven, and what
soever things ye shall declare loosed,''
or non-essential, on earth shall be de
clared "loosed In Heaven" so carefully
would the Great Head supervise tbe
words of those who were Ills mouth
pieces to tbe Church.
With St Paul we can then agree that
"The Word of God is sufficient, that
the man of God may be thoroughly fur
nished." (11 Timothy 111, 15-17.) -,
Tbe Emperor Constant) De, a cop vert
to Christianity, noted thnt the teach-,
ings of tbe various bishops were quite
contradictory. Although not baptized,,
he recognized that If these teachers
were Divinely guided their testimony
would be harmonious. , -
Constnntlne. Ih A. D. 825. convened
the Council of Nice called an "Apos
tolic Council," because the bishops
were thought to be living apostles.
Although Emperor Constantlne prof
fered transportation free, only about
one-third of tbe bishops attended 385.
For ' days.' weeks and months dis
putes prevailed; and finally tbe Em
peror gave the decision respecting tbe
wording of tbe Creed. Ana that M
cene Creed was promulgated as tbe
Christian Faith; and tbe edict went
forth that all who would not accept It
should be banished. Thus uniformity
of Faith was effected by a worldly
prince. . -, -

Discovery Upon Which Turn All the

There Is a wide variety In the pace
at which tbe sun csn give a color or

month In reaching Its ruddiness, a
peach may take only one week to flush

most nimble work of tbe solar ray In
Its decoration of fruit and flower Is not
to be compared with what it accom

Upon this discovery turn all tbe won
ders of photography. At first silver
nitrate or lunar caustic, as It was
commonly called was used In the cam
era. From time to time other sub
stances of greater and greater, sensi
tiveness to light have been produced,
every ojie of them successively giving
the solar beam a wider play and more
astonishing power.
Today, with tbe exposure of a photo
graphic plate, not only are the beatings
of an Insect s wings caught in tne cam
era, but also tbe path of a cannonball.

Laugh and Live Long.
It has been aptly said that there Is
not the remotest corner of the Inlet of
the minute blood vessels of the human
body that does not feel some wavelet
from the convulsions occasioned by
good hearty laughter. The life princi
ple of tbe central man Is shaken to Its
Innermost depths, sending new fides of
life and streugth to the surface, thus
materially tending to Insure good
health to the. persons who Indulge
therein. The blood moves more rapidly
and conveys a different Impression to
all the organs of the body as It visits
them on thnt particular mystic Journey

a person Indulges tends to lengthen his
life, conveying as It does new and dis
tinct stimulus to the vital forces.

Why the RumtU Time Is Ss Lonr.
Drstvn Cot.
The pnilonireil roll "t (liuiuler Is
readily explained hy . i.mpiiri-on with
a volley tired along a lue ut uoups.
Suppose troops to ! drawn up on a
line In such nuuilert as to extend for
a mile and ordered hy a signal that
all could see to tire at once. One
standing nt the end of Hie line w-ould
hear the report of the musket nearest
him Instantly, ne would hear the
others successively. Thus a report 650
feet away would come to him In half
a second, and he would not bear the
last report for live or six seconds after
the anin had been fired. This would
produce a sort of roll, which would
gradually Increase In Intensity.
If the listener stood exactly midway
between .the two' ends of the line the
reports from both ends would reach
bim at once, and the sound would be
but half as long In reaching him as if
he stood at one extremity.- If the sol
diers formed a circle there, would be
one sharp explosion.
Flashes of lightning may be consid
ered as representing three lines of
troops along which the explosions oe
enr at tbe same time. Consider tbe
variety of distance and position of the
listener and we account for the va-
j rlety of sound In. thunder. In moun
tainous regions tbe rolling Is augment
ed by reverberations or echoes.
