Of Intense significance as a reflec
tion of the public sentiment In re
gard to woman suffrage was the ban
quet givtn at the Hotel Pendleton
last night by the Political Equality
league, says a Pendleton paper. It
showed that the representative men
and women of Umatilla county not
only favors votes for women, but are
I enthusiastic workers for Amendment
No. 1, which Is to be voted upon at
the election, Nov. 5.
The gathering was remarkable be
cause of the presence of the leaders
of every political belief. The toasts
Included speeches by representatives
of every political party except the
Socialist party. The explanation was
made after the. banquet that the So-J
clallsts were omitted because Dr. M.
V. Turley of Hermlston was unable to
appear. It was noticeable however,
that special effort was made to secure
substitute speakers for other parties.
Ad. Nye spoke In behalf of the Dem
ocratic party, In the absence of Dr. C.
J. Smith.
The Socallsts, however, said they
did not mind the apparent over-sight,
Inasmuch as their party has openly
espoused the cause of woman suffrage
ever since It was born and has ad
vocated Its adoption In planks In the
national platform of the party In every
civilized nation on the globe so that
the attitude of the party on this ques
tion Is so well known that It needs no
rehearsal at a public function.
Rev. Nathan Evans, speaking for
the Prohibition party, and Dr. I. U.
temple, spokesman for the Progres
sive party, "had the edge" on the rep
resentatives of the Republican and
Democratic parties and evidently en
joyed the advantage of being able to
point to actual evidence of good faith
In the suffrage planks In their re
spective platforms.

Theodore Roosevelt
For Vice President--
Hiratn Johnson
THE RIGHTEOUS ROOSEVELT
(Atlanta Constitution.). .... -
iMr. Roosevelt will stand out, as intimated by the Washington Post
as a president In many respects unprecedented. His achievement is
not marred by one broken pledge. His blbgraphers, to date, are un
, able to find a single Instance In which he employed wild promises
to smooth his pathway to office. Always he has striven at genuine
evils and sought to effect genuine reforms. No conscious or lnad
. vertent hypocrisy cumbers his good name or shadows his political
future.
As much, sadly, cannot be said for some dozens of demagogues,
who, as the Post sallently points out, have left a trail of ruin In
their wake by attempting to Imitate Roosevelt, but with cheapness
and wretched Judgment and palpable Insincerity.
Roosevelt goes back to private life, a man hononed and respected
and acclaimed by all civilization.
Without Roosevelt's acumen or honesty, they endeavored to emulate
his methods and h's success. They had sufficient common shrewd
ness to sense the marvelous manner In which his brand of righteous
ness had laid hold on the popular heart. Lacking his aincerlty, lack
ing his grasp of details and generalities, lacking his supreme good
sense and his cardinal honesty, they gave endless promissory notes
to be redeemed In impossible performances.
The man with this record of accomplishments is to
day the Presidential Candidate of the Progressive
Party THEODORE ROOSEVELT.

It will be remembered that when Theodore Roosevelt was here dur

these gentlemen talked on the street following Roosevelt's speech.
The matter was dropped there until the last few days when President
Taft has taken the matter up and had Mr. Hllles, his campaign man

To Theodore Roosevelt:
President Taft has instructed me to Inform you that under no cir
cumstances will he allow those who campaign in his behalf to in

ance or probity. He begs me to say that he has telegraphed today
to J. Adam Bede and John Marshall Harlan, the short-weight son of
the late lamented and honored Justice of the supreme court, to cease
their campaign of abuse on the stump. Further than this he desires
at this late date, but In some lttlng manner, to acknowledge that your
statement In regard to accepting another term was made by you on
ly when It was necessary on that occasion to Insure Mr. Taft's nomi
nation In 1908. The presldnet believes that he has been lll-advlsed
during his administration by Crane, Guggenheim, Aldrlch, Cannon

takes the Telns In his hands and acts according to his own natural,
honorable inclinations. -
