Union county people are pleased to
learn of the successful operatlou upon
Mies Wllma Wade, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. George Wade of Summerville
at .Portland this week to have a safe
ty pin removed after the girl bad w;il
Jowed it. during a fit of laughter, Ti e
Oregonian recites:
Ten Inches below the throat, a three
Inch safety pin, which bad been swal
lowed by Wilma Wade, 12 years old
'of Summerville, Or., and had been in
her bronchial tube, toe six days, was
last night , recovered In SL Vonce'nt's
hospital by two Portland physicians in
an operaion which is thought to be
unique in Portland. No record of the
recovery of a safety pin under such
circumstances was found in medical
Journals devoted to such operations.
Wilma Wade, who is the daughter
of a Summerville rancher; was seiz
ed with an attack of laughter last Fril-
day and In the lndrawlng of ber breath
as she laughed, the safety pin, which
she.1 was holding in ber mouth, was
' drawn back into ber throat. It was
I closed, allowing it to pass smoothly
down the thorax and into the bron
cWJtubes.
After a number of -home remedies
baa been tried to remove the pin, the
girl was brought to Portland Sunday,
and taken to St. Vincent's hospital,
There the operation was performed
yesterday. ' A tracheal bronchi scope
was used to locate the position of the
pin, a light bulb, mirror arrange
ments and a tube being let Into tbo
bronchial tubes through a suturp cut
a medical book the pin was drawn
ntio the tube and so out of the pas
sages. -
