Pretty Compliment Paid to Recent La
Grande Fair by Elgin Paper.
Editorially the Elgin Recorder pas
aea the following warm compliment to
the (air lost held here, and to the
management:
The men who put their money anu
work behind the county fair held last
week at La Grande are entitled to the
thanks of the people of Union county
and to a greater measure of co-operation
tnan they have yet received. They
bave provided a splendid fair grounds
well equipped with all the buildings
necessary at the present time, and
the race program was worthy of high
praise. Stock exhibits, also, were ex
cellent, and the showing of draft, all-
purpose, standard and thoroughbred
horses must bave been a surprise to
those unacquainted with the develop'
nient or the horse Industry in this
county. .
Taking it altogether the fair was a
success and those who attended gut
their money's worth. The only fail
ure was the display tn the agricultural
pavilion, and this was not the fault
of the management but of those who
should hav co-operated but allowed
petty jealousies to stand in the light
of their best interests. The agrlcuU
tural pavilion Is the most important
feature of the fair and a fine dUsplay
of products is one of the best possi
ble means of securing desirable im
migrants. The fair management of
fered quite liberal prizes for commu
nity exhibits, but with the exception
of the Imbler district, there was no
adequate response.. .
One trouble was that the time In
which to create public sentiment and
secure co-operation was too short. The
.time to begin on the next Union coun
ty fair is now. Plans for its better
ment should be put In operation at
once and the agricultural building
should be filled from floor to celling,
even if it Is necessary for the man
agement to buy the products and pay
the freight on them to La Grande.

SYRIA'S HUGE MONOLITH.
Largest Ston. Ever Quarri.d la a Rslio
of Antiquity. ''...
One of the most Interesting proofs of
the wonderful civilisation of the au
cieuta la afforded by the great slab of
atone at Bnulbee, In Syria. This huge
monolith is sixty-nine feet loug, four
teen feet broud aud seveuteeu feet In
depth. It Is said to be the largest piece
of atone ever quarried and Its estimat
ed weight Is 1,500 tons.
It Is thought by archaeological schol
ars that this huge stone was Intended
by the ancient builders to adorn the
Temple of the Sun near by now, of
course, tn ruins. Here in one of the
walls which still stnnd are to be seen
buge slabs of stone, . which careful
measurements show to be sixty-three
feet long and thirteen feet high. -
And, more remarkable still, tbey are
placed in position nineteen feet above
the ground level. Moreover, although
no sign of any cemeuting mixture la to
be found in these ancient buildings,
the stones have been squared and pol
ished so evenly that only after the
most minute search can the Joints be
found and when traced It is Impossible
to thrust the blade of a p"rl;et Utilfo
between tbem!

Methods of the Grecian Athlat.t In
Homeric Tinges.
Discus throwing was a recited form
of nurllug the stone. In Homeric
times, and even at Olyuipta. a Ktoue or
mass of Iron was first used for the
purpose. This whs held by a leathern
thong, swung in a circle and burled aa
far as possible. . A circular or lentic
ular disk of bronre was used at least
aa early as the beginning of the Oftb
century.
A standard weight must, of "course,
be assumed for the great games, A
discus now In the British "museum,
which seems to have been used, weighs
11 pounds fl ounces, but whether this
was the Ftnnrinrd .weight or not la not
definitely known. . . -

sllirhc elevation of limited circumfer
ence, where he could have B secure
foothold and was prevented from run
ning. Then, with a swing of the arm
and a- corresponding movement of the
whole body, he burled the discos aa
far as possible.
The value of the body movement
was recognized by the sculptor Myorn
In his famous statue, "The Discobo

athlete when be swings the bammer or
even when be makes a drive at golf.
