Manhattan Island.
- The flrst religious service on Man
hattan Island was held Id 162a This
"resulted in the organtzaUoa of a
church, the services of wblcb were
held In the upper story of a mill which
ground the grain of the colonists. The
first minister was Jonas Mlchaellus
and the flrst elder Peter Mlnult, direc
tor general of New Netherlands .
. The flrst church building on Manhat
tan Island was situated on Pearl street,
between Whitehall and Broad street.

and constructed in 1633 by the West
India company. Its congregation was
presided over by Dominie Bogardus,
the second clergyman of New Amster
dam, and was regarded as a more fit

erected a church outside of Fort Am
