MAKING ShLT OF SALT LIKE WATER
SEEING IS BELIEVING
LA GRANDE EVENING 0B3I3VE2
By J. D, OUUlan. ,
Salt Lake If interesting bo.ly ot

thousand, lvu hundred feet nboj Hie
level of t'.O eea It stand a glitssv
bow! of bvlne hemmed in by tlie Wa
patch range and bordered by tia
branches, the Oqulrrh and the Onaijul.
Several largo Islands occur on 1:
vually placid bosom, such as Car
rlngton, Antelope, Stansbury-and otu
ex smaller ones. On some of these ara
ranches, which have an excellent fresh
water as runs out of the hlllB of any
mountain. Some years ago there was
a small herd of semi-domesticated
buffalo on Antelope Island. There
were taken elsewhere aince. .
At various points on the low, shing
ly shores are bathing resorts, among
the finest In the world for families
because 6f the shallowness of the wa
ter, the absence of vegetable matter
nnd the almost absolute security from
storms. In Some places one can wade
out a mile Into the water. .
So dense, too, is this water that one
can He on his' back with hands clasp
ed under his head, without need of
fear that he will drown; he floats like
a cork.
Here Is a great industry in the mak
ing of salt It Is evaporated from the
water which holds so many different
Ingredients.'' There are salt, magnesia,
' gold, etc. There is gold to the value,
of $3.00 to the ton of water. While it
can be caught and saved, yet the pro
cess is too costly to be made a very
extended business. '
For miles In some places the shore
is so near the water level that the
winds will cover It as does the tide
on ocean boarders. Here Is where
man takes advantage of the power of
nature and makes the wind and the
sun tserve him. He takes plows and
rrauers and throws up ridges or low
embankments on the four sides of a
square, with one side near to the edge
of the lake.. Then he cuts a few small
opening on that lakeward side and
retires from' the scene till the winds
blow toward his net he has set for
the water and fills it for him. So soon
as it Is filled, he goes quickly and
stons up the breaks he left in the em
bankment and then does other work
till the sun has evaporated the water
leaving only' the composite sediment
which he then shovels Into huge piles ,
wMch teams haul off to the refinery j
where it is reduced to the commercial j
yrouuci we use in our culinary aaairs.
Riding along, the railway one sees the
stacks of unrefined material like small
shocks ot bay but glistening" white as
the driven snow.. 1

That part of Connordale Addition which is now on the market extends along
Washington Avenue from Twelfth stree t to Sixteenth street on one side and
along Twelfth street between L avenue and F avenue on the other. It is as level
as a table. The soil is a dark rich loam, easy to work and wonderfully fertile.
The sort of ground that produces that th ick, green velvety lawn that adds so
much to the beauty of a home. It is un derlaid with gravel from 6 to 8 feet be
low the surface. This insures perfect drainage and carries off all surface water.
Cellars do not have to be floored and walled with concrete and will always be free
from stagnant water after a hard rain. Concrete curbs and extra heavy concrete
sidewalks f?ve feet wide-- have ben laid. The streets are graded and a ten foot
parking space provided on each side. The city water baa been piped in and the
sewers follow this year. Washington Avenue is paved with asphalt this
summer right to the head of the Connordale addition. L Avenue, ninning from
Washington Avenue at the head of Connordale, past the city hall to the high
school, is to be opened up. Electric lights and telephones have already been in
stalled in the new houses built on Connordale and a street lighting system will
soon be provided. Every requisite of a hight-class. residence district is found
there. Go and see for yourself, or let us take you over the Addition in one of
our machines. We have a legitimate, home-building proposition not a wild
cat speculation. .You owe it to yourself and your family to investigate it.
