and functions, there will be no public
observance of the anniversary.
The fact that tomorrow Pius X will
enter upon the tenth year of his reign
as supreme pontiff partakes of addi
tional Importance inasmuch as It
r roves the superstitous prediction
that Pope Pius, who was nine years
a parish priest, nine years a bishop
and nine years a patriarch, would not
be pope more than nine years. Super
stitions concerning the probable
duration of the reign o popes have
always been quite common, but al
most invariably their fallacy was
shown by the actual facts. During
the reign of Plus IX, the supersti
Itous belief was quite general that
he would not be pope more than 22
years, two months and seven days,
that Is, not longer than St. Peter
reigned after the establishment of the
papal see in Rome. Yet Pius IX
disproved the superstitious theory by
reigning 31 years, 7 months and 21
days. i
There have been but three popes
who have reigned more than 25 years.
The first was St. Peter who spent the
first seven years of his pontificate at
Antioch and then came to Rome where
he reigned an additional 25 years, two
months and seven days before he died
a martyr. Next to him came Plux IX,
who reigned 31 years, seven months
and 21 days, and then came Leo XIII,
who was pope 25 years and 5 months.
Six pontiffs have reigned more .than
23 years; 11 more than 20 years; 300
less than one year and nine less than
one month. Of the first 30 popes, 29
were martyrs, all except St. Dionyslus
who was the 25th. The total number
of popes who died martyyrs was 33.
In view of the precarious condition
of the pope's health and the possibil
ity that he may not survive his anni
versary by more than a few months,
speculation is rife as to bis probable
successor In the pontificate. Of course
there is nothing definite to form the
basis of a forecast, but one thing
seems to be tolerably certain that
the successor of Plux X Is to be an
Italian. The tremendous growth and j
development of the Roman Catholic
church In the United States had given
rise to the hope that sooner or later'
one of the American cardinals would
be selected for the papacy. That time
may eventually come, but at present
that hope U undoubtedly premature.
In the selection of a caudldate for
the pontificate many things have to
be considered and ao Intricate the con
ditions which have their bearing upon
the choice that few men outside of the
church, In fact, outside of the highest
hierarchy of the church, can fully '
realize and appreciate them. A great .
body, especially a religious one, is.
necessarily conservative and the Cath-:
ollc church U no exception. The time k
has not yet come for selecting a pon
tiff from outside of Italy. But. even
If the church were ready vid willing
to go outside, the Italian government
U not yet ready to permit this. The
Catholic church is not wholly fre
In Its selection of supreme pontiff;
hence the agitation, not yet ended by
any means, for the sovereignty of the
pope. The Vatican palace Itself, it
must be remembered, belongs to the
Italian government, and it is exceed
ingly doubtful that the Italian govern
