splendid opinion and pretty compli
ments now being showered by a peo
ple who entrusted you with a duty
to perform.

gon delegates made good In every
phase of that convention which was
Impregnated with unfair dealing, with
double crossing, with thwarting oi
the people's expressed wish and de
sire. Boyd and his colleague, Swift, re
fused to be parties to crooked work;
they refused to disobey the Instruc
tions of their state in letter or spirit
and as a result many politicians In
Or 'gon of the Thomas McCusker type
are trying to discredit them. These
politicians, cheap as they are, will
never succeed, because the rank and
file of the voters know what is right
politically. The day has gone by when
a few can attend a convention, fix up
the slate, trade off federal Jobs, nom
inate a ticket through trade and traf
fic and return home expecting the
people to vote for what they have
done.
In Oregon, at least, every act of a
delegate or an official Is scniltnlied
carefully and the people pass a right
eous Judgment upon such acts. Those
of the delegation who were Influenced
by federal Jobs and other political
trickery must stand before the court
of public opinion and take their pun
ishment. Boyd and Swift were not of .that
stripe. Not only has Wallowa and Ra
ker counties a right to feel good over
the actions of their sons but the bel
ter element of people throughout Ore
gon share In that tame feeling.
Again we say, "Welcome home, Dan,
there's nothing too good In Oregon
for you."
PATRIOTISM AT rOBTLATD.

prominent In Elk affairs and Portlanl
is enjoying the distinction of having
brains In the nation during the grand
lodge.
Tou occasionally hear someone re
mark, "What a fine thing It will be for
the northwest to have all these men
here for it will advertise the country."
Quite true, but at this particular
time let us forget the business end
et us Join In that spirit of Elkdom
and say, "We're glad you came to thi
coast because we're glad you came. If
you should ever happen back and buy
something that Is all right. But rigbt
now, we're glad you are here, Bill,
we're glad you're here."
