S. Piatt Jones made a big bit at the
Chautauqua grounds last night, prov

stant laughter for nearly two hours,
being best in the portrayal of quaint
New England characters. His num

and clean. The only regret of tn
management Is that tbe most die
agreeable weather should stand tn the
way of a larger attendance.
Educational Day Hampered.
Rain and cold kept the crowds away
yesterday afternoon during the course
of the educational day program but
those who went beard three of the
finest addresses that have ever been
delivered on the Chautauqua grounds
on any one day. This Is the unlver
sal opinion of those who attended and
there were about 200 present Pres
ldent Campbell of the University of
Oregon, President Ackerman of the
State Normal 'school and Vice TresI
dent Todd of Willamette, were the
principal speakers. Walter M. Pierco
slated for an address, -was ill, and
couldn't attend and Prof. Hetzel of
the Oregon Agricultural college mis
sed his train because of a wreck and
he wasn't there.
The three educators who woro on
hand however, were treats of the firs
water.
Cooking: Classes Grow.
Today Miss Burr of Whitman col
lege enrolled a much larger class in
domestic science, as complete organi
zation has now been effected. The
classes yesterday" were well attended
however and Miss Burr Is an extreme
ly popular Instructor In domestic sci
ence.
Bible Studies Interest.
Edith Hill-Booker, savant of the
Bible, Instructed a large class of Bi
ble students yesterday. She brought
out points that local students of tlie
old testament bad never dreamed of.
She is Indeed well versed In her'aub
