have succeeded In getting a ' strong
lineup of players to lead the La
Grande Elks at Portland and iho boys
have been working hard on new music
for eome time past and are prepared
to hold their own with any musical

Traveling with a special tnaln, mem
bers of the Overland Automobile fac
tory band of Toledo, Ohio spent sever
al minutes In La Grande last night on
their way to Salt Lake City, whew the
band Of 50 pieces makes an appear
ance today. The organization has
been to Portland where papers praise
the musical ability of the band highly
and after going to Salt Lake the band
I will swing out to Minneapolis an
! then to Chicago having visited most of
'the large cities of the United States.
I The Jounrney is called a transcon
tinental vacation and It apparently Is
In every sense. The band Is made up
of employes In the Overland automo-
i bile company's shops and Include ma
' chlnests, painters, accountants and

; were too. Herr Koehler Is the direc
tor and hewas profuse In his appreci
ation of President J. X. Willys of the
! Overland company which made the
' trip possible. E. A. Wyre, president of

tailing the principle that underlie so
stupendous a trip, Mr. A. L. Lempke
the secretary said last night:
tTp to three years ago. when we fel
lows were working ,'ln the old Pope
! factories, about the only thing we had
to look forward to was pay-day, which
came every two weeks. There wasn't
' much doing In the way of recreation
or amusement. Then about that time
we htard that Mr. Willys had bought
the factory, and almost are first thing
he did when he took cnarge was to in
vite the formene and eub-foremen of
all the departments to dinner with him
at the Farm, Toledo's big summer re
sort. This was the first time any of us
fellows had got a chance to shake
hands with the hos3. We wondered
( what was up, and we didn't iiiid out
u!l after we had had our feast and
the boss made a little talk. He sort
of mapped out what he hoped to do
and told as he would have to have the
help of the me nln the production end.
This little picnic and talk set the fel
lows to thinking and seemea to put a
different angle on things. There as
something to think About now besides
work Just plain work. ' " "
Some of the fellows who were mu
sically Inclined' thought they would
like to get together and form a shop
band. When t.ey broached the sub
ject to General .Superintendent Shep
Jer, he said, "Go ahead."' .
It wasn't very long before we got to
be pretty good and then, one night the
boss came down to one of our parties

going to fit us out with hew Instru
