Noxious weeds grow wild In many
sections of the city where property
owners care a.bout as little for tbelr
property appearance as a Jack rabbit.
Civic pride has improved many park
ings and many yards this year but
alas, there Is still an abundance of
carelessness, A big majority, work
" and toll and strive to get their resi
dence property into sightly condition
-only to have the yard next door an
-ugly mass of weeds. Weeds and this
tle that the law specifically requires
tie exterminated are allowed to grow
unhampered. The city's weU-kept ai
jearance is marred and there Is dis
satisfaction all around. With visitors
expected at the chautau'qua from far
and near. It would not be a half bad
plan for every property owner to see
that something was done to keep down
weeds and keep them down to stay
down. .. . ' :'

These totals represent the interchange
of commodities among 'the nations,
not the entire home production and
consumption, which would be vaBtly
larger. The exhibit shows an enor
mous Increase within a relatively
short period. This is In line with a
trend that has been conspicuous since
the beginning of the latter half of
the nineteenth century and bas been
Steadily gaining momentum. While
thn aecregate value of commodities
Interchanged ay have been augment
ed to some extent by the advance In
price of various articles, it is also
true that there has been a reduction
1n the rates for some products. The
fact of Importance is that the nations
are trading with one another to a far
greater extent than ever- before, and
there Is no fixing the limit of such
transactions In the future.
Many causes contribute to-this re
sult. The Increasing extent to which
ho nrM are becoming civilized and
' modernized represents a powerful ln-
I fiuence. The opening of new terri
tory means additions to commerce.
The enterprise which leads the pro.
ducers of a country to seek markets
elsewhere is a powerful factor. Ger.
many is a fair example. Not so long
ago Germany took a relatively small
part in dealings with other countries.
Today Germany is one of the largest
exporters and Importers, and is en
ergetically pushing trade in every di
rections. It is gratifying to note that
the United States is holding Its own In
this form of expansion, and the pres
ent fiscal year will probably record
the largest foreign trade in our his
tory. In common with other nations
the United States looks forwards to
a. Ill mnrl mm in-liable accessions to
commerce as a consequence of the i
opening of the".Panama canal, wuica
cannot fail to stimulate intercourse by
all commercial people.
By taking the temperature of the
political sea, we opine Mr. Taft will
observe that he 1b approaching some
thing ahead that Isn't exactly an ice
berg. Whale's skin Is two feet thick In
places. There's another fellow who'd
keep on running after losing Illinois
and Pennsylvania.
A contemporary states that there Is
talk of Morgan buying the Nile o
water stock with. We do not think the
statement true. In days gone byal
most any kind of water went In the
stock watering game but at the pres
ent tlmetbe '"aqua" must leave no
trace and that of the Nile is a trifle
too much like the Missouri. How
ever, if J. P. got short of waU-r the
chances are tbat he would get by in
some manner with! liquid mud.
