DEATH KELL OF NOMINATION
CONVENTIONS.
work according to Oregon' adopted
plana.
Iowa's Monday primaries add one
more to the spring string of deatb
knell to the nominating convention.
In a direct primary Senatgr Kenyon,
Insurgent, overwhelms Lafe Young,
Btnndnatter. for the senatorial nomi
nation. A few weeks ago an Iowa "style,'
state republican convention was held
under such complete control of the
standpatters that Senator Cummins
could not get the presidential endorse
ment of his own state. The season has
repeatedly furnished such Instances,
the voters In direct primary going
one way, the professional politicians
In convention going the opposite way.
Perhaps the professional politician,
who controls conventions nine times
In ten, would govern the American
people better than they can govern
themselves. Be that as it may, the
fact Is demonstrated beyond cavil by
this sea.son'8 paralleling of primaries
and conventions that popular govern

The above editorial cannot but
amuse the state of Oregon which
blazed the trail for the rest of the

WOMEN AND DRESS.
The year'of 1912'wlll go down In
fashion's history as the "Whltefoot"
year. La Grande's dame fashion fol
lowing closely at the white heels of
the big white cities, can produce an
army of women who dedeck their feet
and trip along the streets giving
Adams avenue the appearance of the
"milky way." '
But the white shoes and white hos
iery might be tolerated if it were not
accompanied by a contest among wo
men to see who can wear the tightest
skirt. Tbe hobble skirt of two years
ago is a comfortable looking garment
compared with the skimpy skirt of
1912. Corsets have been transformed
into straight Jackets. Instead of blps
and limbs having some of the freedom
Intended by nature they are now put
into splints to produce the "blpless
effect," which U wholly unnatural and
contrary to every rule of common
sense.
But we must follow style. Yes, fol
low, follow, follow the human fam
ily must follow something and with
